paying a decent level of tax?
Got insurance (PCG) that covers an investigation, plus money kept aside incase they decide (incorrectly) that I owe more than I pay.

Ignore it - the Inland Revenue don't have enough staff to investigate everybody they just rely on fear - chances are you'll get away with it.

In the late 1980s my father - then a contractor - was stung by the IR with a VAT bill that he wasn't aware he'd have to pay.
Nice man arrived at the house at 3pm. My dad was at work. Man said he'd wait. My father got home from work at 9pm. Man from the Revenue was still waiting for him. Two hours later my father wrote a cheque for £150k. Cheque was funded by remortgaging the house the next day.
I don't think he ever got over the financial impact - hence he's still working 70 hour weeks aged 64....
hence why i've got:
money kept aside incase they decide (incorrectly) that I owe more than I pay.

This is one of those things that I'd never trust to a forum with opinions and experiences of dubious provenance, go and see a good accountant who can give you advice.
