Assuming I want an IPod Touch and can get a 2nd generation 16GB one for about the same price as the current 8GB one, which should I go for?

The older one obviously has twice the memory so, on the face of it, it's the better buy. But I don't know what the differences are between the generations - is there anything about the new ones that I would want more than the extra capacity?

I don't think there is a huge difference between a 2nd and 3rd gen touch

I have a 32gb 2nd gen which I am happy with - but is almost full (hoping to get a 64gb iphone next year when they become available and my current mobile contract expires)

if you want to have plenty of apps/ music/ visual content on there go for 16gb as I imagine 8gb would fill up fast

if you want lots of music and videos go for the 2g. Apple are concentrating on processor power with the Touch for the benefit of gaming users so it might be possible the 3g has more motor than the 2 certainly the touches have more motor than the equivalent phones try ilounge.com

Go for capacity. I have a 3G iPhone 16Gb, and I have 1.4Gb left on it! Can't tell you how much I hope the 4G next year has 64Gb. That'll be in June, my contract comes up for renewal in May. How handy's that?
Oh, and most of that content is music, over 1100 songs at 320Kb.

The 2G ipod touch can neither be jailbroke nor run at version 3 without grinding to a near halt. If you intend doing either of these things then get a 3G. (And it's only a matter of time before everyone is forced to run at version 3)

The current 8Gb Touch is stil a 2G device. Only the 32Gb and 64Gb have the new 3G hardware. See here.

The 2G ipod touch can neither be jailbroke nor run at version 3 without grinding to a near halt.

I have a 1G 32Gb Touch running version 3 and it is no slower than when it was running previous versions of the OS.

really? Or are you just trying to convince yourself? When I eventually got mine to version 3 it was immediately visbily slower. Granted, mine is the only ipod touch I've seen on version three but I've seen two iphone 2G's on version 3 also and it was almost like something was wrong with them at times.

I'd be the first to complain if an OS upgrade caused problems. I'm no Apple fanboy but compared to the OS 'upgrades' I had to endure when using Windows Mobile on an Ipaq, using and upgrading the OS on my Ipod is a dream.

The only time I notice any slow down is if I am using the Ipod when it connects to Wifi and starts downloading email in the background, but this is very brief and the system picks up again very quickly - I have never experienced my Ipod coming to a "near halt" as described earlier.
