Brother sold me his ip5 unlocked and we fitted my EE sim and all seemed well and good. Phone had half battery life that was used up after a few hours so I put it on charged. Noticed there was no 'bong' type noise when I plugged it in and there was no charge indicator on the screen. Left it on charge over night and this morning it's lost all its charge and won't switch on. Tried three other leads but none are working. There's no fluff in the charge port so I'm at a loss as to know what to try next. Any ideas what to do before I go kick my scamming brothers ass

There was an iPhone 5 problem with both the batteries and the power buttons that - providing you didn't expose it to moisture (i.e. breathe anywhere near it) - would have been covered under a quiet 'recall' that just expired last month.

I would be surprised if your brother had not had any problems with the phone's charging before he sold it to you.

Sounds like it's time for a fraternal punch-up.

He's your brother - you're meant to kick his ass. It's what brothers are for.

So kick him anyway.

I just bought one (used) for better half and it lasts about two calls at full charge before half the charge is used. It also goes from 40% to shutoff with no warning. Will take to Apple store and see if they offer to charge us a squillion before I walk out and play Russian roulette via self repair/Ebay.

Malvern, that is exactly what mine did, and that is what Apple issued their 'recall' on. But the recall expired last month, and they were unlikely to honour it anyway, as if one of the internal moisture sensors has been triggered, they just hand it back to you and say that 'warranty work is voided'.

Is the charging point on the phone free of fluff/lint/general pocket detritus?

ETA - SORRY. Re read your post. Keep going. Nothing useful from me here.

My iPhone 5 is a proper triggers broom, I've replaced the screen twice (smashed em) and the battery and camera both once. If you buy the tool set from maplin for about £6 they are really easy to open up and get to all the gubbins - plus it's incredibly satisfying to sort them yourself for bobbins.

Think the camera cost me £5, the screen about £21, battery £4.
All new parts from eBay, all genuine (check seller rating and cross reference part ID numbers etc first). Actually I think the screen was a recondition unit, but I could not distinguish it from new and it performs flawlessly.
They are nicely laid out once you open them up, and with a bit of practice you can completely strip them down and build them back up in minutes.
Lots of vids on YouTube offer instruction, I've not had to do one (yet) but I'd be amazed if the battery charge point wasn't a simple part swap out.

My phone still retains a full days charge as a result - at 3 years old it's performing as new. Feels good to beat the system.
