I prefer not to use random open wifi hot spots, but you are right in questioning whether it really matters or not, as I'm not sure how much I use it now.
Decisions
3G isn't much slower.... 🙂
I'm on O2 and use the BT OpenZone spots a fair bit. They are pretty common in city centres.
I'll probably try to use them a bit more now that mobile data is no longer "unlimited" on my contract.
I don't think 3 has free BT openzone
to be honest I prefer just to use 3G when out and about to using random wifi.
3 have a 1gig data allowance - which seems ample to me, so I don't worry too much about using 3g, and only use wifi at home really
The only trouble with using 3G when out and about, apart from it being a bit slow, is that picture/video quality can suffer quite a lot as the networks re-compress stuff on-the-fly.

Tell me more.... I'm on O2 as well, but OpenZone always wants me to pay!

True, true... 🙂
Used the McD's wifi alot why were in france this year, even moving some money from an RBS business account to our Lloyds personal account to do some wine shopping in calais, which cleared instantly even on a Saturday, first time i have really been impressed by it rather than just liking my iphone

Should be free use of OpenZone and Cloud hotpots with your contract?
Usually you just get the login page for the OpenZone, click on the O2 logo, enter your O2 phone number and you're done.
Cool, I'll give it a go next time. 🙂
It's also free with Vodafone too.
I use it from time to time as not everywhere has 3G or free Wifi areas, I find it a right pain to log in though at times very slow. Once on it's ok though.
Geoffj: my understanding is that the app is for BT Broadband customers only, no?
02 only need to offer wifi in the first place because of their lousy 3G coverage:

Well it also keeps load off their network generally - which is a good thing for everyone.
(sitting on full 3G here in Gateshead without issue BTW).
Plus the "magical" Apple FaceTime only works on wi-fi...
