I am going to Cyprus (Turkey) next week, and I will be charged by EE £1.50 to receive calls !! 😯 Receipt of texts are free though.

I know I am being a bit stupid, but how do you switch off calls, but still enable receipt of texts? Flight Mode wont work?

The place where we are staying has wifi, so there we will be able to do wifi calling, but again can you have wifi on without calls being able to be received?

Any advice ? Ta

You could not answer I suppose.

Are you sure that's right? I've not heard of anyone charging to receive calls in decades.

Wi-Fi and the xG network or different protocols and work independently. Voice and text are not.

If EE genuinely are charging, presumably they can disable voice on the network temporarily if you don't want it? I'd be shocked if they weren't legally obliged to do so in fact.

Could you set up call forwarding to, say, your UK landline? Bonus if you've an answer machine.

Appears that I read the website too literally.

You can receive calls (and not be charged), but just don't answer them. Have to switch voicemail off too or that would incur the £1.50 charge.

Just have to make sure that it definitely says wifi calling before calling anyone !

^^ this. Whatever you do do not call your voicemail, they charge a bomb for that. WhatbInwouod suggest is you turn off voicemail or change your responce to "do not leave a message, send me a text instead"

I just get a PAYG sim, normally about £20 for 3-4 GB data for going abroad much more data friendly than EE.

Used 3 and tesco mobile previously. Only give that number to family/close friends.

My Oz network did and as I was on a sales rolling dial it cost me a lot...
Call them and check first before switching to flight mode etc. (my phone still does WiFi on flight no idea about iPhone bit old tech really)

Sorry, I should've said, any UK providers.

Just have to make sure that it definitely says wifi calling before calling anyone !

You can't make phone calls over Wi-Fi, it's the wrong network (unless Apple are doing something fruity). You'll need some form of whatskypesnapface type app for that.

Make calls at home Even when there's no signal

We all know a place where the phone signal’s a bit patchy, like that niggly spot in the back bedroom. Well now you can call and text as normal wherever there’s WiFi, thanks to WiFi Calling.

WiFi Calling is supported on iPhone, Blackberry, Android and Windows devices bought directly from EE in one of our stores and online. Some Android and Windows devices bought from other retailers won't support WiFi Calling

Bugger just read some more stuff and Wifi Calling will not work abroad, I guess its Facetime only?

And if I need to speak to companies etc, just got to pay for it 🙁

Russ - yep, looks like the best option is to go for their £5 a day thing. Not too bad, as I don't intend needing to make calls/send texts every day.

Divert all calls to voicemail, BEFORE you leave the uk. that way the call stays within the uk network and doesnt incur any roaming fees.

Dont wait until you reach the destination.....you'll get stung.

as per the advice above, don't call voicemail using the phone network. What you can do is to use Skype over wifi to call the voicemail box and check it that way - if you're handy with a phone you can also set up the Skype phone book entry to call the EE voicemail number then enter your phone number and pin automatically - and that will only cost a few p each time.
