my current phone contract is just about up. I currently have an iPhone7 simple question, given the costs of new iPhones are there any real benefits to upgrade to one of the current crop? Or am I better off just saving my money and moving to sim only.
to be clear bar a few scuffs there is nothing wrong with the current phone. More a question about the technology and whether there are any features that makes it worth looking at upgrading in any depth.
Just a little put off when an iPad Pro basically costs the same as the "cheap" 2018 model.
If the phone works ok, has enough working capacity for you, then just go over to a different payment plan. O2 have separated the phone contract from the airtime contract for a while now, so you could carry on as you are, but there are always deals on offer, just go into the shop and ask. You might get a god deal on one of the cheaper iPX phones, or an iP8.
I’m still using an iP6+, although I’m working on a way to afford a 512Gb iPX Max...
I just changed from an iPhone 7 to an XR. I was happy with the amount I was paying monthly, I actually managed to reduce the monthly payments slightly whilst increasing my data allowance and paid less for the handset than I got for my 7 traded in to Good Buy Tech (£200). It's definitely better. Not revolutionary, but I'm definitely glad I changed. Battery life is better than the 7 ever was, and certainly better than it was latterly.
I went from 7 to 8, battery is better, that’s about it. I haven’t bothered to get a wireless charger yet.
If I had to pay for my phones I’d either go non-apple and save a few quid till it was dead, the XS is silly money, the XR is a lower spec than an 8 in a nicer case.
Pixel 3 looks good.
TBH I think we’re way past peak smart phone, anything decent from the last few years will be fine.
I really like my iPhone X. Swiping around the interface just feels right and the camera is amazing. Bear in mind I came from a 5s so the gainz were big.
But as above, smartphones aren’t really changing year on year at the moment so whether it’s worth the cash to you over an older model is pretty debatable.
I really struggle with this seeming necessity to upgrade phones. From an environmental perspective it’s madness. Yes, maybe when the phone is practically unusable fair enough but not before that. And no, I don’t buy the selling it on so it’s not so bad argument- that just means there is a market in two/three year old phones which people are buying and ditching other serviceable devices for.
Phone companies and app developers are equally culpable - we should all be making an effort to making existing stuff work adequately for longer.
I went to an XS and it’s a joy to use but I will keep it a long time, my last one was a 6S +.
But if it’s working fine and your happy go sim only, I really enjoy Face ID I don’t have to log into anything anymore or press the Touch ID button.
Had an iPhone 7 as my work phone and unsurprisingly it was excellent. Had a 5S as my personal phone and dragged it out after my Samsung S6 contract expired (the phone died long before).
Upgraded to an XR 2 weeks ago and am well impressed. Latest iOS is probably the main reason for that. People comment on the display not matching that of the X or XS - not a real world issue IMO. XR display is excellent, even when playing media in non-1080. Camera seems pretty good. Haven't stretched it yet. Face ID is epic (in a simplistic way). And the XR generally requires 2 hands to hold/operate, unless your name is Hagrid.
I don’t think it’s worth upgrading for the sake of the upgrade, but if your current phone is knackered or you’re at the end of the contract and upgrading anyway it’s worth going for the best model you can. I’m on PAYG and just buy handsets and my last phone was a 5 and I got it back when they first came out and it packed up a couple of months ago. I bit the bullet and got an X and it is night and day in all departments as you’d expect.
I don’t think the latest phones are silly expensive when you compare what they can do now vs what they could do 5 years ago and factor in normal price escalation as other products have seen. I think they’re on the normal price escalation curve and very cheap considering how much it would cost to buy an individual device that does everything a good smart phone can do as well as it does. Good sh1t costs money... at least I know i’ll Get a good 5 or more years of use out of it.
I went from a very good 6s to an X on a good deal from EE. I’d had the 6s for three years, no faults at all and then had the free battery upgrade a year ago..
I deliberated for 18mths out of contract on SIM Only with EE (my contract provider) then this deal came up for the X So I took it.
X is a jump in UX, but essentially the IOS is the same. So what ever you choose, it’ll be familiar and better battery time.
Wait for a deal IMO

I went from a 7Plus to an X last year. I get almost the same screen area and battery life on the X as i did on the 7 plus and it's a whole lot more portable/pocketable. Face recognition is okay, but I wish I had the option of a fingerprint as well.
That's it...in terms of user experience the x takes some getting used to (no home button) but is more intuitive when you do. So, if you're happy with the size, I'd stick.
I've had every top of the range iPhone since its release, but won't be getting an XS as there's practically no difference to my X.
If you can get a deal on your upgrade then go for it, you get a brand new phone and a second hand phone to sell. If not then don't and go SIM only and save £££££s. iPhone 7 works brilliantly and will surely soldier on, barring accidents, for a few years yet. If you can get to an Apple store before the end of the year they're doing battery replacements for £25.
However the lure of shiny is strong.
thanks, my feelings are being confirmed. The newer phones don't really offer any real benefit other than being shiny and new.
Save my money and move to sim only for now.
If the phone is working OK and you’re not having difficulties with storage capacity etc., I’d suggest sticking with it and change your payment plan. I upgraded my iphone and the new one is just about to go back for the second time under warranty (absolute PIA!), so have gone back to my old iphone 5 on a super cheap tariff from EE (I shopped around before contacting EE, and they beat the closest deal by a couple of quid a month).
I’ve got the same phone and it seems fine, although I might take up Apples cheap replacement battery offer to make it last a lot longer.
Another “bug” about the X...
If you want to reboot it, make sure emergency contact isn’t enabled...
And don’t try rebooting it in the office either, even if you have earphones plugged in.
The siren bypasses the earphones and goes direct to speaker at full volume.
I got a few looks, and one comment “are you in distress?”
So its obviously happened to a few new X owners.
I too miss such a simple “home” button, but over the last few months it’s almost sunk in.
Oh, the side button double tap brings up Siri... which I very rarely use.
Yeah removing the button definitely requires relearning. I find the 'swipe up' where you'd have pressed the button quite intuitive, but still struggle to remember to swipe down from the right hand 'ear' to bring up the quick launch menu, and then always end up doing that when I want to check the notification centre. Not the end of the world though!
