'iPhone Unavailable' message on lock screen

Hopefully someone can help shed light on this for me - my daughter came downstairs this morning to find her iPhone with the message 'iPhone Unavailable, try again in 7 hours 58 minutes'. This suggests that someone has tried (repeatedly) to access it remotely during the night (the way screens lock incrementally, it must have locked and unlocked several times to get to 7+ hours). I didn't know this could even happen and Googling hasn't thrown anything up yet. We have tried the obvious 'switch it off and back on again' but nothing else yet as I had to dash to work.

Does anyone have any idea how this could have happened and how it can be resolved?

Thank you

I've had my phone do this in my jersey pocket during a bike ride. Did your daughter have the phone stuck to her in the night?

I really don't think your "tried to access it remotely" theory is feasible. I'm pretty certain being locked out can only occur due to failed physical login attempts. Not sure there's anything that can be done other than wait - though I guess you could do a remote wipe and then restore from backup, but doubt that's worth the hassle.

No - we have a 'no phones in bedrooms at bedtime' rule and it was on the side in the kitchen.

brother/mother/cat trying to get a sneaky peek at whats on the phone? simplest explanation is usually the right one.

It’s not possible to remotely access an iPhone, or even attempt to. If it was just on the side then someone tried to access it, as said above, simplest answer is usually the correct one!

Not that crafty if she couldn't remember her own passcode.

It is very possible that our foster child would attempt to do something like that, but for it to be locked for eight hours would mean they must have started attempts very early in the evening (with the way Apple steps up the lock times on repeated attempts) and that didn't happen – I was in the same room as the phone watching the football so I know that for certain. (This is the only reason why I wondered if it could be attempted remotely – I wouldn't see a remote attempt on the phone as I wasn't looking at it).
