Hi,

I'm off to France in a couple of days, staying in a fairly remote gite. I'd like to have some background music on in the evening when I'm recovering with a glass of France's finest.

Something compact, that will run off the mains. Does NOT have to be loud or full of bass. Just don't want something that sounds like it's made out of an old bean can.

Any ideas please?

Ian

Agree, the Soundlink Mini is very good. Battery life is good too.

I know it's not comparable but my first bluetooth speaker was a Tecknika £20 jobby and that battery literally lasted a week on full KAPOW! or half week playing a for a fair few hours every day.

The Bose lasts 6hrs or so on near to full KAPOW! but it kicks out the sound much more incremental if that makes sense.

totally depends on your budget.

Bose sound link mini.

End of thread.

It would be a waste of money getting anything else.

Another extremely impressed and satisfied Bose Soundlink Mini II user.

Awesome bit of kit. Albeit not cheap. Somethings are worth paying for.

YMMV

Normally Im a bit anti-bose, but I am another happy soundlink mini owner.
Rather pleasant sound from such a small box.

Version 2 you can charge via the USB port on the side.

Have one of these which surprised me by being very good for a <£40 speaker:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bluetooth-Universal-Compatible-Smartphones-Generation/dp/B00AO23V0K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1440492258&sr=8-2&keywords=kitsound+speaker

It's good enough that it's my usual garage speaker these days. Charges off a regular micro USB lead and runs for ages from it's own battery.

FWIW I think Bose speakers for an iPhone are over the top price wise. I bought a set as a gift for the ex-wife and never really rated them. For what the OP wants something in the £50 area will work perfectly well. I have two sets of Vestalife "lady-bugs" being going strong for years, connected with jackplug as old Apple adapters on mine. EDIT these seem to be about £20 now, Impaid more but that was 5 years ago, might be worth checking if quality is still as gooD

Depends on how much you want to spend. For £25 the Anker A7908, £40 the Creative Muvo Mini, £50 the JBL Flip 2 and above that I would go for the Creative Sound Blaster Roar 2 rather than the Bose but that's probably personal preference.

I picked up a Jam Touch from Tesco for £23 surprisingly good clear sound but a bit light on bass, runs for several hours from a charge via Bluetooth and charges via USB USB. Volume control is by twisting the top which works well.

Thanks everyone for your views. I didn't want to throw too much money as it is only for a 2 week holiday (I use SONOS at home).

I happened to be working next door to Lidl today so popped in, they had one left so i bought it. Hopefully it will be good enough for a bit of background music and/or R4's dramas that I have been downloading all year!

Thanks again,

Ian

In traditional STW-irrelevance mode - I have a B&O Beolit 12 speaker, that cost a sh1t load of money and has a brilliant sound quality but it will NOT stay connected to my phone by Airplay. I used to think it was because the wireless router was in another room, but now with the router, speaker and phone within 3 feet of each other it still keeps cutting out. Not happy.

Not designed to be portable, but I've just read a review of this: http://www.thonet-vander.com/ratsel.html
on Flipboard.
Rated very highly, it's on Amazon for £120, but currently unavailable. Separate sub and satellites with remote, looks good for an office or shed.

If you're after something a bit cheaper, I was on a bit of a budget and got one of these by Bolse and am very happy with it, is bluetooth or 3.5mm jack input.

Logitec UE boom. Not particularly cheap but you get decent quality. Battery life is excellent. Can be paired in stereo if you had 2 of them.
