My iPhone SE was soaking in water in my rucksack for about 6 hours last Sat in pissing Lakes rain unbeknownst to me at the time. I’d already turned it off as there was no signal, but tried turning it on when I found it wet (like a dick and before I knew better). It’s been drying out in a bag of rice for the last 48 hours but still won’t switch on after being plugged in so looks like it could be FUBARed. I have £75 to pay to clear the Tesco contract I’m on and start again. I’m not really techy so don’t want the latest fancypants or expensive phone - liked the SE as it’s smaller than most. My sim is currently with a Tesco (O2) which I could keep but it’s not the best deal ever. Any advice on phones or deals out there...or ways to resurrect the current one? Going to Tesco tomorrow to see what my options are...Cheers

I went iPhone 6 something to a Motorola g8 power.

One month in and all is well. It's bigger than my iPhone, but the battery actually lasts. Phone is fine camera is fine.

John Lewis will price match and there is a 2 year guarantee. It was a lot cheaper than any I phone.

As irritating as it is i think it's just worth going out and buying a new one from John Lewis or somewhere like that for raw, hard cash.

Social media aside, and the brain drain that smart phones cause, it is probably the most useful object and tool you will ever own. I was without mine for a couple of weeks recently, and ended up just buying a second. I couldn't access my banking, navigate round cities (...which are now designed to be navigated only by sat-mapping, due to endless one way, no right/left tusn), do my usual shopping etc etc.

Second hand phones always seem to have something wrong with them, or have battery issues etc. Same with reconditioned.

I'd buy myself a newer iphone and a dry bag. They are far more waterproof than the older ones as well!

iPhone 7 from EBay. Just make sure you get one with at least 85% battery health.

My 5SE is on its last legs, battery wise. I've been pricing up new phones and have decided on the new SE from either Apple or John Lewis, works out about £17.50 per month interest free credit from Apple, and a SIM only 30 day contract from Plusnet.

Plusnet uses the EE network and I'm already a fibre customer so it's about £6 per month.

OP here - the phone is deaded like a dead thing.
Don't want to buy a used one as you never really know what sort of life it's had (battery) so looks new iPhone time.
Read some reviews on the SE 2020 - sounds pretty good but sounds like the battery lasts about 2 mins before needing charging again (slight exaggeration). Anyone have any first hand experience of this or the iPhone 7? Weighing up whether to buy a new phone outright then get a sim with giffgaff or similar - £10 for 6gb data and unlimited mins/texts....Tesco's 500mb data for phone at £20 a month is a bit shyte...god, how very boring.

The new SE finally tempted me away from android, had it a couple of months now.

Not sure how much of a useful like for like comparison I can make as I’ve previously bought cheaper android phones, so *everything* has changed. So, trying to keep new and shiny positiveness out of it, I don’t regret the switch (mostly- apple really doesn’t think like I do in some UI respects), the hardware seems solid, the camera is really rather good. My other half has an iPhone 8 for work and android for her personal phone, but is convinced enough by mine that she’s just bought an SE too.

I’ve gone from a 6s Plus to the new SE as I got bored of waiting for the Pixel 4a. It’s a brilliant phone, battery easily lasts all day, great camera, 5 years of security updates, not too big. Bought the case for it which was well worthwhile as took a tumble on the MTB and it took a nick out of the case but the phone is unmarked.

Did I mention it’s waterproof to 1m? 😉

It’s been drying out in a bag of rice for the last 48 hours

This is a myth and dosen't work, in fact it worse for the phone as rice dust gets in the charging ports, microphone etc... (thanks Stephen Fry on QI)

What you need is lots of little bags of silca gel

If you can hold out another couple of days the next generation of iPhones are released next week.
Might have an effect on the prices of the current lineup!

I went from SE to SE2 - battery certainly seems better to me (and the SE also has a brand new, from Apple, battery in it). It is a chunk bigger though. Yes you get used to it, and the old SE now feels like a toy in comparison, but it’s still something to bear in mind

Music Magpies eBay shop quite often has 15/20% off on used mobiles. Worth keeping an eye on.

Cheapest networks at the moment are :

SMARTY - runs off 3 network infrastructure. I'm paying £10 per month for 30GB of data (there are cheper/ more expensive packages which include rollover data) depending on how much you use. You can change month to month too

GiffGaff - Runs off the the O2 infrastructure (same as Tesco)- Same set up as above just fractionally more expsnive

Voxi - runs off Vodaphone infrastructure - pricier again.

All use the same model, you just hcoose how much you want to pay and if the networkj coverage bothers you.

If you go to smarty I can refer you and we both get a months free. (PM me if you want)

The small virtual networks are great, but make sure you double check they offer what you need, eg. most of them don't offer WiFi calling for instance. I'm currently on iD Mobile (Three network) for this reason.

Seriously though, new phone and John Lewis. Then a sim only deal. I have a BT sim only deal with 20 GB data and unlimited calls/texts for a tenner a month.

I'll disagree with that as I tried it and it fixed my iphone 4 when I drowned it once.

Tesco’s 500mb data for phone at £20 a month is a bit shyte

Bloody hell, how long have you had that?!
My last Tesco SIM only deal was 8GB and unlimited SMS/calls for £11/month plus a month free.
That was 12 months ago and I'm just about to renew with a better deal.... Probably £10 and more data.

Just waiting for my pixel 4a at £15 per month and £10 to giffgaff, I'm on a goldwn goodie bag so 9(or 10)Gb and unlimited other stuff. My original pixel is still going strong but the charging is a bit hitty missy.

If you aren't tied to Apple devices; there are a number of Android phones that have IP protection - It's the main reason I went for a Pixel; my previous phone suffered death at the hands of a rain soaked lakes ride as well ! - Pixel 3XL is about £400 on Amazon; brand new.

Saw pixel 4a for about 330 yesterday or you could try the Poco x3 for about 200. Depends if you want large or a little smaller and budget. I'm on a Poco F1 and it's been faultless. Keep looking around but there's really nothing I'd swap this one for.

Incidentally should anyone's electronics suffer the same fate as the op's, don't try to power it on if it goes off, take a Hoover pipe and make as good a seal as you can, and suck the water out the same way it went in - through the ports in the case. Do that for a few minutes and then you can spark it back up.
