Any ideas what's going on here?

I backed up my old iPhone to a PC using iTunes, then restored the backup to a new iPhone, only now hardly any of my passwords have moved over. About five actually.

Thanks 🙂

I used to be the case (on a Mac) that you had to enable the option of doing an "encrypted back-up" for it to back-up (and restore) passwords.

It's happened to a few people I know who use iPhones, including when "upgrading" to the latest iOS, not exactly a brilliant featuyre!

Try backing up to iCloud rather than a PC maybe? I tend to use backups to a desktop as a sort of backup to iCloud backups if that makes sense, just because iCloud ones will always be more up to date. Never had a bother transferring to new phones that way - not least because things like passwords will be synced across a few devices by icloud anyway so they are sort of all back ups for each other

I've always had to enter a few passwords again when getting a new iPhone.

Aye but hundreds though?

To be fair, it might be the universe's way of telling me to get new passwords. I was always getting bugged about insecure or repeated passwords. Can't keep using ilovepizza1 for everything forever.

Why on earth are you still using iTunes, would be my first question!!

Just use iCloud to backup/restore. You should be doing that anyway, it's 2022 not 2012 😂 As long as all your passwords are stored in the "iCloud" part of the keychain, they'll all be synced.

not sure what they've done but 100% this will be user error. The iCloud/keychain syncing works very well.

I recall that iTunes backups needed to be password protected to enable copying sensitive data.

Haven't used iTunes to backup anything in the last 8 years or so. iCloud backup is automatic and pretty instantaneous so always up to date.

Makes sure iCloud Passwords & Keychain is turned on in Password Options. I just transferred to a new (to me) iPhone this weekend.

I don't have broadband. (Long story), trying to be a minimalist smart/tightarse using unlimited data on phone which has generally worked very well, until now...

Can't you just use Quick Start to do the transfer https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT210216 (or is the old phone to old to support it)? It's worked fine for me iPhone to iPhone and iPad to iPad, shouldn't need broadband but would need WiFi

Yeah backup to iCloud and it’ll save them, then pull them down when you setup or restore.

Oh, looking in iCloud settings, keychain backup is set to 'off'. Which I guess it was on the old phone as this is a restore from that. So if i put the sim in the old phone, backup keychain to iCloud as Drac said, then swap sim over again and pull them back. Should work..?

Yep that should work - Keychain over iCloud is the apple password manager. You effectively had it just running as local password (secure!) storage. Set it up on the original phone first. Get that synced. Then sync your new device(s).

I have to say, recently going to purely keychain has changed my life - being an iMac/iPhone user. Very secure passwords for every single account I have - and I know none of them! Just needs a fingerprint / faceid. Took a few hours to go through and get it to change every account to a secure new password but was well worth it. That + 2FA for the important things, feel pretty secure now. With the benefit of it being far quicker to touchid now than have to type out a password!

Thanks all.

I guess my next question is: how long will it take to sync and how will i know it's done so i can put the sim back in my new phone?

The old phone has a faulty home button making it a pain in the ass to use so not like i want to just start using that again. It's why i bought a new one.

If it's just got the keychain to sync that should take seconds - you should be able to see them in Settings>Passwords to verify they've all appeared

I put my two phones next to each other and let them do their thing.

I've also binned off lastpass for keychain. Way better and free.
