That's Apple for you...

Must admit that is one aspect of my iPhone that I was really happy to leave behind.

Can you not do something clever involving sending the files to iCloud or similar and download from there to the phone?

When I say "something clever" I mean something I don't actually know how to do myself.

(you can use other non-itunes software like copytrans instead BTW but you'd need to install it on your work computer)

There are various bits of Windows and Mac software that let you do this but I assume you don't want to install anything on the work PC?

I use an app called AcePlayer. Handles pretty much all movies and audio formats.

It will happily connect to any DLNA media servers, FTP, SAMBA, or HTTP servers you give it and let you transfer files from there.

Or it can appear as a web page which you can access from your PC's browser and drag files onto it.

Downsides: you obviously need to have your iPhone on the same wifi as your PC. And downloaded songs/movies are stored with the app, not added to the main iTunes library.

If you have any trouble using it then consult http://ranysoft.wordpress.com/

if you can install then you might as well install itunes and then authorise it to your itunes account then your phone and computer will speak.

you can have up to 5 authorised computers per itunes id

iTunes math does the, you enable it and it tell where you music is on your computer. It then matches them with the ones on iTunes server. You can then download at will which ones you want onto your iPhone. There's an annual subscription though.

I've had that problem before and without installing iTunes on your work PC you're pretty much stuffed.

I used dropbox to store the files and downloaded them at home.

If you do that then you could just play them directly from the dropbox app.

Very true GrahamS, but I wanted them with my other music in iTunes (I'm a bit OCD about things like that - my CD's are alphabetically organised and then chronological by artist).

Yep fair enough. I don't think you can get them into the phones proper iTunes Library without installing some software on the PC, which I assume the OP doesn't want to do.
