One by one by iPhone refused to charge from each USB port after a few goes, so I just moved in to the next one thinking it was a SW screw up. Now I can't power anything power hungry, eg USB HDD, from any of the USB ports - seems like they are all fried for high current loads.
Anyone seen anything similar?
NB It's a Toshiba Satellite laptop - sadly just outside the 2 year warranty from John Lewis.
Without wanting to point out the blindingly obvious, isn't this actually Apple's problem, not Toshiba's or John Lewis'?
Hmmm USB 2.0 ports should be capable of supplying 500mA at 5v.
Can't see how they'd get away with not supporting that.
I've a PPC that offers 2 options for usb charging - fast or slow. I think the fast might use over 500mA, maybe 1A
USB spec is 500ma but the iPhone charger supplies 1amp. However, the ports on the computer should be regulated to only deliver 500ma - a device shouldn't be 'allowed' to draw more than that. I think this is a laptop problem - you could see what Toshiba say. Otherwise you'll have to rely on an external powered USB hub.
Fail to see how the phone could ‘fry’ the USB ports, it's drawing power, after all, not sending. Sounds like the laptop's at fault. The only issue I've had with USB is due to an iffy cable causing my 500Gb external drive suddenly dropping off the
desktop, which caused it to delete a year's worth of photos from the library. Fortunately, I believe some nice people have sprinkled fairy dust over it and got all the missing data back, which will be triple backed up. It may be something similar here, a dodgy cable causing the ports to not connect properly.
