Is the calendar/organiser fairly basic? A friend who owns one has found that to be a problem as is used to Outlook and being able to set more complex recurring reminders etc. If so is there an app. that will do the job? Asking as a potential owner - my current Nokia does the job well and not sure I would cope without a good organiser. Thanks.

Not sure how complex you want to be but I use Google Calendars and it works brilliantly with the iPhone. You can set up repeating events simply enough and the free SMS and email notification is great.
The only extra bits I'd like are repeating alarms and maybe a 'snooze' option, but I only use the built in calendar - an add-on app would probably give you a lot more options.
I think OS4 is out about June and may well incorporate more powerful features as Apple are keen for more adoption by the business community.
Mate of mine is an IT director and rolled a lot of iPhones out over the business and they all use Outlook.

It works fine for me. I just sent myself a recurring appointment invite from outlook 2007 which doesn't work in setting up a new appointment in my calendar but I think if I did it by synching it would work - I certainly had no problem transferring my diary from my old Nokia onto the iphone when I got it.

Creating a new appointment, the options for recurrence are every day, week, 2 weeks, month, year.

On the phone itself you can set up new calendar events to recur daily, weekly, 2-weekly, monthly or yearly and can have these with/without alarms. If you use Outlook on the PC or iCal on a Mac the iPhone calendar syncs with either of these, just set up anything too complicated to do on the phone (like "every third thursday of the month" etc.) on your computer and sync it across.

maybe a 'snooze' option

Regular alarms, which can also set to reoccur, can have snooze set. 9 mins is the default.

To the OP, this is what you get in iCal when setting a new event.

My iPhone's synched with Exchange and everything I do in Outlook 2007 on my PC updates fine on the standard calendar app. Not tried creating meeting requests on the iPhone though...

If Apples own isn't quite what you need there are loads of organiser type Apps available in the App Store.

Will it sync with anything other than Outlook on a PC? Don't fancy paying the £100 or so for the programme...

It will quite happily sync with Google Calendar, over the air. No software needed.

As for the original question, if you're creating an appointment on the iPhone you can set recurrence daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, yearly and set an end date or let it recur forever. What you can't do is set to repeat every tuesday and thursday for 10 occurrences like in Outlook (or the full google calendars web interface). If you create a recurrence like that elsewhere it will show on the device done though.

If you need all the recurrence options on the device, then Windows Mobile does it, but then you have to put up with using a Windows Mobile device all the time.
