Before anyone says it, no I don't wish I had an android phone.

iPhone 12 mini, approaching 3 years old, never missed a beat, battery still good. Put it on charge last night all fine, picked it up this morning and nothing, screen is just black/off. Have tried the up/down key then power key which seems to work for most to no avail.

Any ideas, please? I'm away early in the morning and not back until Sunday. Could do with my phone Saturday really as I'm doing a rally and lots of the info I could do with is accessed easiest through the sportity app.

Checked the cable, and defluffed the lightning socket?

Is your charger definitely working, are you sure its not just completely drained of power?

If the battery got super flat, like dead as a nail, you might need to put on charge with a proper mac charging cable, whatever they are called, and it might take a while before it's responsive.

But it's possibly a knackered battery.

I know you said you've done it, but just in case you didn't do it correctly...

Press and quickly release the volume up button.

Press and quickly release the volume down button.

Press and hold the side button.

When the Apple logo appears, release the side button.

Tried two cables (one apple) with another (work) phone, both fine, tried on mains adapter and in-car.

De-fluffed the charger port.

It’s sometimes worth waiting a few days to let it discharge then plugging it in and see if it reboots. But probably it’s bricked.

Update: phone is dead, dead.

Have tried various chargers, not charging it, all online tips etc to no avail. Took it to the local apple store this afternoon and they confirmed it's dead, only option is a £369.00 repair via apple which would include replacing most components. I declined as at that point I'd be nigh on £1,000 in to an obsolete phone...

So, I might want an android phone after all!

You'll get one from the Apple refurb store for £379.

No it’s not. Here’s another *sensible* option.

You’ll get one from the Apple refurb store for £379.

Even the refurb is 150quid more than an android that will do absolutely everything you need.

I'm not anti apple, Samsung do it aswell. Spendy spendy phones that fail in exactly the same way as all the others.

I think I'm just going to get a good condition used iPhone advertised locally (not from a scally) and take my chances at £100. My previous iPhone (7) gave 4 years of excellent service but the battery and charging port eventually gave up. The one prior to that did a few years without issue and only cost me an insurance excess for a screen replacement as it was my then girlfriend's old phone after an upgrade.

It's fair to say that I'm a bit miffed having paid £630 up front for a new phone to have ended up in this situation two years down the line. It blows my SIM only phoneconomics out of the window a bit...

Having had a trip to an apple store, I must say the phones make the actual computers look remarkably good value though!

that sucks, did they actually tell you what the problem was/what was broken? surely they didn't just literally say "its dead"... did you get a report? What were you using to charge it btw?

Can't say I'd be at all happy if any expensive piece of tech died after <3 years... obviously EU members have some protection in this regard as possibly it wouldn't be seen as a "reasonable" lifespan (if down to manufacture/design not misuse)... not sure if there's a UK equivalent though!

My 5S is 10 years old. Never a problem but I need to think about an upgrade as a number of apps will no longer upgrade to the latest version.

The Consumer Rights Act exceeds the EU legislation. It states that goods have to be of "satisfactory quality" and you have up to six years to make a claim.

Two years out of a £100 handset I'd say is reasonable, two years out of a £700 handset before requiring a £370 repair not so much. IANAL but I'd say there's a case to be had there and I'd be escalating it within Apple, see if there's a store manager willing to confirm in writing that they believe this is a reasonable expectation.

Mrs DB recently received on of the Apple refurbed iPhone 12 minis - absolutely immaculate whereas some of the resellers are selling phones in worst condition for more money

yeah that's what I was thinking of. Only if it was misuse (e.g. using a poor quality charger, which is why I mentioned that!) would that not be relevant (you'd hope!)

Theory and practice are two different things of course.

My experience of Apple's "legendary" customer service is that they really like it when you tell them how wonderful they are. It might be worth a second (assuming there was a first) Genius appointment, lay it on thick about how this thing is your life and you love it and you're heartbroken but you really can't afford £400.

With Apple I'd probably try for a "gesture of goodwill" before taking the "letter before action" approach.

My 12 battery seems to be going off faster than my near field vision. Two charges a day at the moment for only modest use. It loses 10% just getting out of bed! Will upgrade at some point (work phone) but they aren’t offering a 15 yet.

To answer previous questions:

No report from apple, the 'sales tech' took the phone out the back, said he'd plugged it in and couldn't get any response from it at all, so the only option is to follow apple's procedure for repairs, send it off to them and for the sum of £369.00 I'd be getting a new phone other than the screen and front camera/face ID sensor. This charge is in line with the 'other damage' estimate for repairs on the apple website.

Charging - generally with original apple cable (occasionally  juice branded cable) and always with an apple wall socket adapter. Was an original apple cable and adapter the night it died.

The 'sales tech' did mention 6 years to take it up with the original retailer, which in this case was 'very'.

the ‘sales tech’

Not a Genius then? Book an appointment. Dragging a salesperson off the shop floor who is going to plug it in and proclaim "it doesn't work" doesn't really tell you anything you don't already know.

Suggesting a £400 repair on a two-year old £700 handset without anyone performing any troubleshooting / diagnostics at all is an absolute pisstake. If you took a misfiring car back to the dealer and they said "yeah, you'll need a new engine in that, mate" without even lifting the bonnet, you'd laugh in their face.
