You just need itunes.

Is iTunes available for linux? I don't know, but it would be amusing is it's not since the phone is unix based too.

itunes is not native to linux you'd need an emulator like wine. I'm just wondering if it's painless or just a load of hassle?

Buy at the Apple Store and they can do the activation bit for you so it won't need to be plugged into iTunes to activate. You can set up an Apple ID via the web to be able to buy apps.

Although tbh, if you're linux-inclined you'll have a much easier time with an Android device.

Get an Android phone and you don't need to plug it into your desktop/laptop to use it - and it really is based on Linux.

nah you don't - there's a few other apps

For Linux, have a look at GtkPod

looks good but I've not had chance to try it yet

GtkPod only works with jailbroken iPhones. And you need a Mac or Windows PC to run the tools to jailbreak it in the first place.

Maybe I should virtualise a windows environment?

There are instances of iPhones running Android and Linux, but if you're going to use OS3 then you need iTunes in order to back up all the stuff you install on the phone in case you have a disaster and have to replace the phone, when you can restore from backup. You also get the benefit of regular free OS updates, like the forthcoming OS4 upgrade.

Android or wait for Nokia to do it better than Apple.

I could never get iTunes to run through wine. I am therefore resigned to thinking that nothing Apple works with Linux ... or at least not well. To use a biking metaphor, its like shimano and their center-lock rotors. They just wanted everyone to buy Shimano hubs as well as brakes. Same with apple. Besides, even on windows, iTunes is ludicrously demanding of system resources.

Therefore, my opinion of Apple.

Hardware = good
Software = bad.

Not sure I get this argument. If its a major drain then don't leave it running. Just fire it up, sync, then close it down. No?

I'm sure its fine on a shiny new computer, but when you have something thats 5 years old running a celeron processor and 512mb ram then I find that recent iTunes versions takes ages to start up and close down - which is silly considering that all it really need to do is play a few songs and move some files about.

I guess I should stop winging and buy a new computer! 🙂

Rhythmbox has only just started working with iphones (one or two releases ago). But it does work very well now. You can view the entire disk structure of the iphone.

Doing it here (and I flaming hate Apple for not releasing a Linux version of iTunes)

You're gonna have to run a either Windows or Mac through virtualbox just to run iTunes to load music (or software) onto it!

...and expect it to take a while 😉

I love Linux, ...I hate Apple for this.

Eh? You presumably checked the requirements before purchasing?

It's a complete ball ache supporting desktop software on Linux. Much more so than on any other platform.

Suddenly, these iPod things don't seem like such good value.
