As above really. Wife's iPhone 5 s (less than 2 yrs old) seems to run out of juice before your eyes since a recent update.

She's a bit whatsapp crazy and also the phone is full (literally) at the mo of a million pics of our daughter. 100% charge each night and it's down to 30% by lunchtime without using it that much. Used to last all day and more before recently.

Any ideas? I just updated it again yesterday to 10.2 or whatever the latest is.

I have an iPad Pro that I think also seems to be a bit battery hungry lately. Might just be imagining it though.

My iPhone 6 seems fine though with the same update.

Go through all the settings - my 5SE was hoovering battery afterwards too. Services and app features might now be switched on that were off previously and there are a few new features in the update that will be on and can be switched off.

Can't remember - If things were on - and I don't use them - I switched them off.

Less than two years old? Still in Apple warranty, book an appointment with a Genius.

Actually.... it might have been "Spotlight". When you do a big re-install in OSX it can take days for Spotlight to go though everything indexing it for the first time meaning the machine runs slow (a lot of users berate the new update because system performance seams to have taken a dive but in fact the system is still effectively installing).

I switched Spotlight off in iOS because it was annoying me to get suggestions from other apps in web searches but the battery drain in the first few days after updating might be Spotlight working away in the background going through all the content in the the various apps. Whether switching those services off or not if you've got a lot of content - like lots of pictures- then leaving the phone switched on overnight while you charge it for a few nights after an update gives the system time to chug through all that indexing.

Location Services can be another battery draining villain - a lot of apps used to have the option to be on, off, or 'on only when in use'. Now a lot of apps are tending to want to use locations all the time even when the app is off.

Life got much worse on my 5 after update to 10.1. I changed the battery, using this and a toolkit.

Much to my surprise (I had to get pretty medieval with the battery to get it out - unlike the videos, mine was attached with double sided tape) it all works fine and the battery life is back to normal.

Update to 10.2 has gone fine.

I've noticed on the last few updates the first couple of weeks the battery gets smashed with minimal use.

I get angry, turn everything off, and it just seems to sort itself out.

We just put a new battery in my wife's 5 which is 3yrs old. We paid £30 at a simple concession stand. Now much better, prior behavious similar to the OP's. The new iOS has lots of location option stuff automatically switched on plus all the widgets. Maybe they are draining the battery. I have all of that turned off. Variois help videos online.

My 5S battery life took a big hit after upgrading to 10.1 (wouldn't go all day without being charged).

I updated all the apps, reset it a few times, and it sorted itself out - one thing I found was that push notifications from various apps (facebook / messenger IIRC) had been enabled, so the backlight was coming on every time someone liked a photo of a kitten, etc.

I suspected that Strava was also sucking a lot more battery than usual (I think it was still running in the background somehow), but there have been a couple of updates recently and it seems back to normal now.

Bottom line is that battery life on the phone was back to normal before 10.2 came out. I was reluctant to install 10.2, but it's been OK - still got 75% battery left after a normal day's usage, including about an hour of Strava.

I didn't intend to update (the message popped up just as I was tapping the screen and, as it had already downloaded in the background was suddenly installing), but battery has been poor since.

Worryingly, it shows signs of not accurately reporting battery level, as it can show 8% then when you plug it in, instantly 20%.

This is what my 5 did before becoming a bit useless.

It's the only thing that's really annoyed me about Apple recently is the forced updates which clearly don't run as smoothly on an older phone.

In the settings you can see which apps are using the battery the most. Facebook is a classic for doing its background app refresh thing so make sure you turn that off. It always used to turn itself back on after Facebook updated itself as well.

I've had the battery problem too. It definitely went downhill after updating a month or two ago (not sure what version thought). One thing mine did is that it would turn it self off if it was cold saying the battery was dead, then be ok again when it warmed up.

It seems to have sorted itself out now so not sure if it was a bug that's now been fixed.

Alex you are not forced to update, controlled in options. Two of my relatives I recently updated their phones from iOS8 to 10. As above switch off all the notificatiins which cause the screen to wake up (battery expensive), facebook, email etc. Yes for a call or a text (perhaps). Also I do not have app update set to automatic. Many apps now update once every two weeks and app update over a weak data signal is very battery expensive. I just do "update all" every now and again, eg when phone plugged into power and wifi.

All this plus at 2yrs would expect a battery to need replacing

Just to reiterate when there is an iOS update its common for apps to be updated too, that could be 50 app downloads in the days thereafter depending upon your setup.

Alex you are not forced to update
You are, if you had it on automatic updates at the time the new software became available.
There are hacks to stop it, but basically as soon as you see the first "new software available" message, you're stuck without jumping through a load of silly hoops.

All this plus at 2yrs would expect a battery to need replacing
Mine is 7 months old, but I don't know how long it was on the shelf prior to purchase (i.e. when they stopped manufacture).
