Does Apple's habit of quickly making stuff obsolete mean that buying an iPhone 5C or S would be mad right now? O2 have some deal (trick?) where I can get one new for £240 then immediately go onto a £13-per-month SIM-only contract giving me the minutes I need. Madness? Will I find the iPhone is useless in a fortnight's time? Ta for any tips.

An S would be fine, but I wouldn't pay that for it.
I bought my 16GB 5 for £95 second hand and 5S looks like it's worth about £150 depending on size.

My 5 (and therefore the 5C) feels like it's just on the edge of running the latest apps, so might only manage one more iOS update.

hard to say, I feel that this isn't as bad as it used to be, but it certainly still a 'thing' - there will no doubt be a new OS to go with the 7 / 5SE to make use of some fancy no hardware thing on the 7.

You could take the 5S, update to iOS 9 (providing it works okay on 5S) and then leave it there and it should work as-is forever more, but you run the risk of missing some security patches, not a massive risk if you're not trying to keep your data out of the hands of the FBI.

Alternatively, £240 equates to £20 a month over 2 years, plus the £13 sim-only -can you get a 6S for £32 a month?

Sure about that P-Jay? 😉

Incidentally I'll be selling a 16gb 5S in excellent condition in a week or so.

Jesus wept... It's a good thing I no longer work as an Account Manager for RBS.

As a self-confessed nerd the premium on a iPhone 6 is so high considering my iPhone 5 still worked, last year I just negotiated my way down to a £14/month contract and when my phone started failing recently it was far cheaper to repair. Still going strong, maybe when the iPhone 7 is out the 5s will be nice and cheap!

The 5S is still a good phone, I wouldn't get too hung up on having the latest OS....needing to have the latest OS and the features they sometimes incorporated is an attitude very much from several years ago when each version of a phone or OS was a decent leap forward....nowadays not so much.

All decent smartphones have good displays, run perfectly fast enough, take good photos, play music and sync your emails etc....other than that it's just a case of want not need.

The next leap forward should be battery life, rather than continually make the iPhone thinner I wish they'd just stick a decent battery in there instead!

Does it have to be an iPhone?

I moved to a Samsung S5 about two years ago, and its been hassle free, none of the slowdown and unreliability I had with iPhones, and its water resistant, which is a huge boon for cycling.

I got an iPhone 5S late last year, after a couple of 4S second hand purchases.
Its good, much better than the 4S it replaced (flogged for decent chunk of cash) and hope to get a coup;e of decent years usage out of it at least.. I like it.

I've had my iPhone 4 (no 's') since 2010 and its still motoring fine, original battery and everything works exactly as it should

Apple's habit of quickly making stuff obsolete

I'm not sure what you mean by that - my phone no longer gets included in iOS updates but that doesn't stop it functioning exactly like the phone I bought its in no way obsolete in that theres no barrier to using it the way I want to - all the apps I use continue to work even with frequent and recent updates themselves. It would be obsolete if I couldn't access the services everyone else used phones for (web/mail/messaging/GPS etc) but all those things are as available to me as everyone else.

It would also be obsolete if it got bricked by its own OS updates the way certain android tablets have been

I bought a new 5S a couple weeks ago after the motherboard gave up on my 3yo iP5 version. Like you said, they can be had at around £250 now so if its lasts me another 3 years then im perfectly happy, seeing as its been the best phone ive ever owned.

I cant currently see the point nor afford to pay £200-£300 more for a 6.
Fingerprint ID is ace, I have access to my emails, Clash of Clans and eBay. Sorted.

I got it from 3, but it came unlocked. Market seems to be around the £150 mark but if you're interested email me. I'll send you pics and if you fancy it we can talk about price.

It's worth considering holding off till the apple announcement on march 22nd (ish). likely to be an iphone 5 sized new release. The new phone is going to be on sale for current iphone 5 prices, and the 5s going to be reduced in price.

You heard it here first! (i could be wrong, but that's what the internet is saying)

I'd be surprised (and slightly miffed) if the 5s drops much further in price on release of the new 5se

I prefer the shape of the 5S to the 6, so if a new phone isn't forthcoming at the end of the month I'll probably be getting one before the trade in expires on my 4S

This. I hope the rumours are true and Apple do release a newer, smaller phone. I have an iPhone 6 and once the novelty of a new, shiny thing wore off I realised it wasn't as good to use as an iPhone 5. I hope we also see a return to smart phones being designed to be genuinely one-handed devices rather than just getting bigger/thinner screens.

Oh, and whilst you're at it Apple, how about making a phone that isn't so slippy you daren't pick it up without rubber gloves on?

Have a look at EE. They are doing decent deals on the 5S just now. I got one last month through Buymobiles.

I have a 6 and a 6+ both can be used one handed. My old 5 seems tiny in comparison the screen especially.

5S is the threshold for using Apple Pay and any banking stuff that requires fingerprint/securevaultygubbins authorisation. 5 and 5C don't have it.

The 5SE announcement should be March 15th, at which point 5c and 5S prices should drop. Whether the 5SE will be priced sensibly and would be worth you considering is still unknown. There seems to be two thoughts, one is it will be priced in the £500+ range (not far off the 6S) and just seen by Apple as a 4" alternative to the 6 or that it will be priced at current 5S levels in order to be an attractive option for emerging markets like India as well as tempt people still on 4's and 5's to upgrade (those who don't want the 6 form factor).

I'm hoping for the latter and waiting for the 15th, if it's priced close to the iPhone 6/6S I'll probably just get a second-hand 5S now (my current 4S is about to die) and buy a 7 in September.

I thought it was touch and go as to whether Apple Pay could work on a 5S - needed an extra level - don't think my 5S has AP, anyway..

Just to echo what's been said - I don't really feel my iPhone 5s is lacking any amazing features of the newer models. It still runs fast on iOS 9. I'd quite like to try a bigger phone but I have no complaints about the speed. TouchID works well, and the battery seems to last me a day. Still good.

I can't work out if the pace of technology change has slowed in the last few years, or whether I'm now an old luddite. I used to want the latest phone/ PC but now I don't really care.

The 5 and 5S are good phones still. Nice and compact.

I'm a heavy user of smartphones and wouldn't recommend because the batteries don't last long.

I was glad when the 6 came out - better battery and snappier.

Now using a 6S 128gb which I'm happy with as the 6 glass was easily marked.
