[Closed] Iphone 5 - extra battery for "on-bike" charging?

Anyone have any advice on a suitable extra battery to charge an iphone 5 whilst out cycling? Would only need to be used occasionally to provide an extra 2-4 hrs charge (mostly strava recording - at the moment I loose the end of a ride if over 8hrs).

Needs to be very small and light (jersey pocket size). There seems to be lots of "battery cases", but I already have a lifeproof case, so would be looking for a waterproof option (or I could put it in a clear bag)? Or a small light external connection - but would that be an option whist on the move?

Or upgrade to the iphone 6 which has a longer battery life???

Advice / experiences much appreciated?

I'd be looking at something like an Anker 'powerbank' style external battery that you can plug in.

Something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Anker-Astro-Mini-3350mAh-Ultra-Compact-Portable-Power-Bank-Charger-Battery-BLACK-/161916724406?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368

although not sure I would buy from ebay, unless through a reputable seller, as there are apparently loads of fake battery products on ebay.
You might struggle getting one that's waterproof, but you could just put the phone & battery in a Ziploc bag.

I'd be looking to get a cable with 90 degree connectors on (at least the phone end) to reduce strain at the connectors.
Like this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/MYLB-Angled-Lightning-Generation-Generations/dp/B018LFB5QI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1465202346&sr=8-3&keywords=lightning+cable+right+angle

Regarding your comment about upgrading your phone to get an iphone6 with better battery life.....if you were going to do that, would you not be better off spending the money that it would cost you on a Garmin device? My Edge500 (bit old school now) has 13hrs battery life, I think.

I use a slightly larger version of this, as it's more capacity and only about£2 more, but if you want small..

But mine is still prtty light and small

I can recommend the anker 2nd gen Astro e1 offers a couple of charges to ip6, may be a little big heavy for a jersey,
You could probably get a smaller one if you only need one charge

£12 on amazon

i second the garmin suggestion you can get them for like 50 quid - then you dont risk your phone being flat when you need it , getting wet in the rain etc etc.

i have a £15 amazon special power bank to keep my garmin topped up over multi day rides. its 10000mah and charging the garmin doesnt seem to dent it 😀

My technique for long (road) rides is to have the phone mounted on the bars for navigation etc, and the battery in the side pocket of a topeak tri-bag with a small right-angled USB lead to the phone.

Or if you don't want it on the bars you can stick the whole lot in the tri-bag.

Obviously this means besmirching your bike with a tri-bag - but I don't really care for "rules"

I have an anker and a mophie. They're largely indistinguishable in terms of usage. I have a short garmin cable and a short iphone cable which I keep in a plastic bag with the charger. When needed, plug in and pop it all back into my pocket for a bit.

I had one of these for a while

Worked quite well, mounted to the bars themselves.

I would also say get a proper gps. My handheld can do 24 hours and could use rechargable or ordinary AA batteries.

You can increase phone battery life by turning the app to low power mode and/or turning off mobile data. The gps chip is seperate, your phone is using lots of power by communicating to server and getting map updates.

Finally there are tons of these power packs, just get one that does 2 or 3 full charges and keep the lot in your backpack. I also suspect your current phone's battery is old (2yrs+?) so doesn't last as long. I doubt even my iPhone 6 would do 8hrs with endomondo unless in low power mode

You'd be surprised. With a (~2400mAh) power pack connected I've had my 4S running Endomondo for 8 hours and the phone still had full charge at the end of the day and that was in the days before Low Power Mode.

The gps chip is seperate, your phone is using lots of power by communicating to server and getting map updates.

Download the map tiles before you go - that way it doesn't drain as fast and still works when you are out of reception. Also it (should) only be requesting map tiles while the screen is on.
