Hi, I've had my iphone 4 replaced under warranty and noticed that the back scratched within a day of having it (unlike my old one)

Having had a bit of a poke about it seems that my new phone has plastic front and back, is lighter and generally feels a lot less solid.

I'm not happy and was wondering if anyone can shed some light?

My original felt like a quality product but the replacement a lot less so!!

Ta

The original is 'gorilla glass' - hardy stuff. Not sure what you've got there, but kick it back if you're not happy.

Yeah I will be taking it back when I can get to the shop, problem is there's still not many of them around to replace it with!

I've also noticed what looks like screen-burn at the bottom; wonder if I've got a refurbished display model or something 🙁

Not easy to show in a photo really and no my previous phone was definitely glass front and back!

Can I ask; if you guys run your nail across the back from middle to edge do you hit a sort of lip or ridge on the edge?

Mine does and I'm sure the old one didn't!

Yellowing screen is common but it goes away. To do with them being made and shipped so fast the adhesive doesn't cure fully in time.

Find it hard to believe it's plastic, weigh it on some scales and get someone to weigh a "real" one? If you can feel it, should be an obvious difference...

Note gizmodo thought the proto they had could be plastic: http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone

It's an alumino-silicate 'glass', which I think might be very slightly more prone to scratching, but is a lot tougher and more flexible than 'normal' glass, so it's much less likely to shatter in normal usage. It's used in helicopter windscreens, and I believe it's also called Plexiglass in the States. Difficult to imagine that a plastic screen could have been used as all iPhone screens have been glass from the beginning.

I don't have an accurate scales on which to weigh it unfortunately.

Do other iPhones have this lip or ridge at the edge then, or is it smooth?

There is a lip around the edge of the glass.
