I dropped my phone a few months ago and shattered the glass. Apparently it loses its waterproofness so I want to replace it. I don’t have apple care but that will make it cheaper to get repaired.

Has anyone done it using those DIY kits off the internet? Was it a PITA or was it easy?

TIA

If you doing it yourself ( or anyone other than apple) any warranty will be void.
I had mine done once by a third party, when I broke it a second time, I went to apple for another replacement.
They took off the third party replacement and refused to do any more as their H&S rules didn't allow it..
I had a bit of a complain, in a loud voice in the middle of the shop on a busy Saturday afternoon and they agreed to fix it..

If I take out apple care, is there any way they can tell that the damage is old (would they even care)? Makes it much cheaper initially.
How much did they charge to repair it?

if you want to DIY it then i've had good experience with the kits and instructions from iFixIt.  Don't just read the instructions but also the comments that other leave on each step as there is really good info there.  My experience on the glues for sticking things back together though are that they aren't that great so if you care about waterproofness then probably better to give it to Apple to do

It was a while ago on a 7 IIRC..No recollection of the cost. I do recall that they wanted £115 for a replacement lens cover though. (£8 from Amazon)

I've done quite a few DIY phone repairs but back glass on these looks like a nightmare job. The proper way uses a laser to destroy the glue (and not the magsafe coil) although it's still a nasty job to get all the tiny shards of glass away and cleaned up. DIY means applying heat very carefully to melt the glue enough to get the glass off - a really long tedious process.

You can only buy Applecare+ in the first 60 days (iirc) after buying the phone. Get a quote from Apple, but I'd be looking for a third party repairer with the proper laser kit to do it.
