It's heavy. REALLY heavy, and the sharp edges hurt if you try to hold in it one hand.Prop it up for porn.
(particularly if you're going to be at it for a while)
So far this is the only useful post on this thread
It's funny isn't it. As I keep mentioning my Daughter has worked how to load photos from her iPod, PC and the family iPad she has also worked out that once set up that it does itself. No need for iTunes or this dinosaur age of drag and drop no it just streams.
Because the rest of the PC world thought it was a gimmick
and the PC world got it wrong yet again and also reported
that allegedly that one manufacture making Apple products had
been accused of copying ?

Another reason Apple products are worth the money
Also none of the products come in Plastic 😉
surely there's software available that will enable your print server to act as an AirPrint server as well?
Tried that. Didn't work. In fact it was worse than didn't work - not only could the iPad still not see a print server, neither could my Windows laptop any more.
Can't help you any more than that as I took the smart option and moved away from Windows years ago
Ah, in that case how do I print from my iPad to a printer connected to a box on which it is possible to install Windows (I think I could quite happily move away from Windows on there, or at least dual boot)?
As to the multiple attachments thing - no need. Just zip all your files together and send as one attachment.
I'll add that to the list of workarounds for a basic failing that other people came up with when I asked before.
I like my ipad. I'm sure others like their other tablets.
And they all lived happily ever after.
That was just an illustration of a point, nothing more. You know what he meant.
Do we? He came up with an inaccurate analogy - got a better one?
Ok looks like this has run its course or derailed onto the usual vs track.
But personally I don't understand the popularity of them. Couldnt give one regards who prefers what it's there choice.
Where many devices will use standard connections be it physically or software based, Apple do the opposite and limiting possibilities.
Not to mention over priced accessories.
This is why they are at the bottom of my list.
I think Apple is for suckers
I'm done here now too many people getting upset.
And talking of suckers there is a fair few here who breath smell suspiciously of Mr Jobs' penis.
Night 🙂
aracer unsure of your problem but go into system preferences and delete your printer.
then come out and go back in and search for the printer then click ok then that should be it.
If not then make an appointment to see one of there in store Genius persons
as something isn't right.
There is an Ipad4, didnt we just get number3?
I would only be interested in one for facetime as my family cant seem to turn skype on.
Damn this android phone, it just doubled posted.
Are there any better alternatives?
Aha! Figured out why I struggled to move the icons. The touch screen has two huge dead spots on the left and right sides, so as I dragged the icon my finger entered a dead zone and it snapped back to it's original position.
Does this happen to anyone else or have I managed to pick up a dodgy one? Or have I just got non-conductive fingers?
Easy way to check is to install a drawing app and swipe your fingers around on the screen a bit - you can see the dead areas beautifully.
aracer: if your printer is not AirPrint compatible have you tried the Smart Office 2 app ?
I print from that fairly often to my ancient non-AirPrint network laser printer.
As for multiple attachments: for the default email app then it is really down to the app you are attaching them from to provide that (e.g. you can attach multiple photos from the Photos app easily enough, or multiple files/docs/pdfs from GoodReader)
If you need it more generally then use a different email app like "Group Email"
Does this happen to anyone else or have I managed to pick up a dodgy one? Or have I just got non-conductive fingers?
Sounds like a duffer. No dead areas on mine. Go see a Genius and they'll give you a new one for free.
if you were using a Mac I'd say use Printopia as it works great. As for Linux/windows, a quick google reveals many people who've done it successfully so I've no idea why you can't manage it, sorry.Ah, in that case how do I print from my iPad to a printer connected to a box on which it is possible to install Windows (I think I could quite happily move away from Windows on there, or at least dual boot)?
sounds like you have a duff one if its always like that! This has happened to me a couple of times, always solved with a reboot though.Does this happen to anyone else or have I managed to pick up a dodgy one? Or have I just got non-conductive fingers?
are you 12?And talking of suckers there is a fair few here who breath smell suspiciously of Mr Jobs' penis.
@countzero - the tone of your posts are like that of a deprived old fishwife.
Not had any luck getting my printer work either. Luckily my files are shared by streaming so my other devices print them off instead.
As said though tablet, smart phones are bloody amazing technology.
Now it's gone completely. Will swap next time I'm in work.
After the rant in the first post, my whining about bugs is related to the fact that it was intermittently missing my touch.
Printing use Google cloud print
Attachment just add one at a time
Photo sharing use dropbox or just drag the specific folder over
Oops they were android solutions
As for Linux/windows, a quick google reveals many people who've done it successfully
Indeed. Though there appear to be an equal number who've failed like me, and it's certainly far from straightforward even if you can get it to work. I've tried multiple times with different methods. I certainly don't get these sort of difficulties when trying to interoperate between Windows and Linux systems. I'm certainly no computer numpty as I do that with systems far more complex than most people here deal with - and nor am I particularly a Windows fan - it's just that ISTM some Apple stuff is designed deliberately to make it difficult to interoperate with other things.
GrahamS - not really keen on spending that much to fix something which should "just work". In any case presumably that would just involve more irritation as I'd have to open that to print rather than being able to do it natively. Maybe I'm asking too much to expect it to be as easy as getting a printer to work from Windows or Linux?

On the Windows box after I've installed Airplay stuff? That will fix both problems (of the iPad still not seeing the printer, and no longer being able to print from Windows over the network)? I'll give it a go - thanks for the tip, and a gold star to grantway if it works.
Oops they were android solutions

well, yes, since there aren't (and probably never will be) iOS drivers for your printer. It's easy from Windows/Linux as you can just install the appropriate driver. It's really the failing of your os (XP in this case) which won't let you install an AirPrint server, for some reason.Maybe I'm asking too much to expect it to be as easy as getting a printer to work from Windows or Linux?

Not the failure of "there aren't (and probably never will be) iOS drivers for your printer" then? Silly me, why didn't I realise it was Windows which is the problem?

Yep fair enough. I didn't think £7 was too much to add some seriously useful functionality (bearing in mind it is a full ms-compatible office suite). But YMMV.
The native AirPrint is normal Apple walled-garden stuff really. It "just works" but you have to stay within the confines of the garden, in this case by buying an AirPrint-enabled printer or setting up an AirPrint server.
Bear in mind that the single biggest cause of problems and crashes on Windows (and probably Linux too) is device drivers. All that flexibility comes at a cost.
It is two different approaches. Apple try to keep you to a sub-set of tested and approved stuff that will "just work" tm
Whereas Windows et al give you maximum flexibility at the cost of some faffery and the odd blue screen.
Once you see that is what is going on it explains the rationale behind some of Apple's odd decisions.
There's absolutely no point in having hundreds of different printer drivers bloating and/or destabilising iOS because there's a simple system which works fine: AirPrint. I'm sorry, I don't know what you've done to your computer to stop it from working. The only thing I can suggest is a complete re-install from scratch. Or buy a cheap s/h Mac mini to use as a print server.

In the old days maybe. Haven't had a problem with that for years, and never with a printer driver.

You're still stuck with OSX, though. Bleugh. As you say it just (about) works.

I must be in the old days then because Windows still dies fairly often on me.
(Had to laugh the other week when I saw one of the screens advertising Surface had blue screened 🙂 )
aracer go onto Apple uk and then go to support
and select the I Pad and below you will see printing on air print
select it and there is an community base chat on different printers.

Never thought I'd say this...
Windows 7 very stable,
New printer plugged in no CD needed just found a driver and worked.
Not seen a blue screen in years.
You have to admit it's easier making software that only needs to run on 20 (very slightly) different sets of hardware. However as people come in all shapes and sizes with different needs and requirements I'm glad I have choice in what I use.
My daughter can manage recording films on her Blackberry, editing them on Windows 7, and viewing the uploaded result on Android... Does she win a prize or something?
No just proves how simple technology is which is my point. So how programmers and PC builders can't work it out is amazing.
Yeah Windows 7 is great too but still prefer my Mac over it.

Typical Apple - won't even let you make a link which works 🙄
This seems to work though:

Works fine for me! (On iPad)

That was my experience with XP too. Never had any major problems.
I have a macbook now. It's alright but you know what? It's a computer and computers are beyond complex inside. Really. Only a relatively small number of people really know what is going on inside them. Sometimes it doesn't work. Just like any computer. Anyone who says macs never go wrong is lying. They have their faults, they'll never be perfect.
The problem is that people expect something as massively complex as a computer running a wide variety of operating systems and applications, is always going to sit there never going wrong. The problem started when normal people (as opposed to experts), started thinking they understand computers.
If your bottom goes wrong do you ask your mate or a doctor?
If your computer goes wrong do you ask your mate or a computer professional?
*that's* what is wrong with computers today.

If your bottom goes wrong do you ask your mate or a doctor?
Normal procedure is to ask on here.
I assume you get as frustrated at the dodgy advice on healthcare given out here as I do about the dodgy computer advice... Of course, people are unlikely to die if I get it wrong...here anyway.
as someone pointed out years ago,
"The main problem with computers is they do exactly what the user tells them to do"
Whats an i pad?
I'm still amazed at how uppity people get about the choice of tools other people choose to use.
Do you have slanging matches about which brand of screwdriver/toaster/pen/dvd player you use as well or this only reserved for computers and phones?
FWIW, there's Android, OSX, Windows, Linux and BSD machines in this house all happily co-existing without too much bother.
to coin a phrase 'Why can't we all just get along?'
to coin a phrase 'Why can't we all just get along?'
Most do, just somebody decided to put on inside a walled garden to try and lock in consumers 🙂
Yawn
It's getting late now piemonster isn't it.

Anywhere geeks gather to be honest. Go to a coffee forum, or a petrolhead forum. Everyone thinks they're right and everyone else is wrong.
Except me. I know I'm right.

There's a correlation between how much something costs and how much people argue about their choice of product. Invest a lot of money in something, and you're more likely to justify and defend your decision.
It's interesting that the OP got his iPad for free - no money invested, no incentive to look past the problems.

It's not always about the money though is it? What if that product works and integrates with whatever systems that are currently in place with minimal down time or compatibility issues that any price differentials are insignificant compared to time wasted getting something to integrate or managing workarounds?
I don't need to justify my computer/phone/tablet choices as they are effectively made for me and changing them would be utterly pointless and counter productive.
I do question the wisdom of £1k laptops for surfing the Internet and the odd spreadsheet though.

I thought we were discussing iPads?
Yes that is the topic of discussion apart from where I mentioned phone/laptop/tablet but that's because I see them as part of an integrated system.
I must be missing the "works and integrates with whatever systems that are currently in place with minimal down time or compatibility issues" bit then. Though helpfully people do seem to be providing workarounds.

What's also interesting is how obsessed many non-Apple owners seem to be with Apple products.
I've never heard anyone claim 'Macs never go wrong' but they do score consistently highly in reliability and customer satisfaction stats, and professional reviews of their products are generally very favourable. But that's all due to brainwashed 'sheeple' I suppose.
What's also interesting is how obsessed many non-Apple owners seem to be with Apple products.
It seems to correlate to the number who answer any question with Apple
What toilet iFlush
what cooker iCook
etc
You're one of the worst culprits TBH. It's like people feel the need to define themselves by their dislike of a certain computer brand. 😕
For many people Apple is a good (if relatively expensive) solution.
I'm trying to convince my wife to get an iPad for the house, and so far she's resisting on the grounds that she doesn't want to be yet another Apple sheep. Sort of understandable, as so many people bang on and on and on about their wonderful iPhone etc (her best friend has that annoying habit of showing her iPhone off at every opportunity, and referring to it as her 'iPhone' rather than just her 'phone'), but the truth is that it does seem to be the best tablet solution for what we need (internet, email, iPlayer, photos and music). A brief play with various tablets in a shop recently showed that the iPad seems to be nicer to use (or is it style over substance?). I have an Android 'phone that does everything an iPhone does, more or less, but I have to admit the iPhone is just a bit 'nicer'. And the Airplay demonstration that I was given recently proved just how well thought out apple products and solutions are. Apple seems to have made exactly what we need. Other manufacturers don't quite seem to offer that. So an iPad it'll most probably be then.
What's being more of a follower of fashion/public perception: buying the thing you actually think looks best, or buying the thing that you think means you aren't being a 'sheep'? 🙂

I've had a good look, no definition by dislike just hear people go on and on about how good but just don't see it. Everything apple does the rest do. I live in a seamless integrated world where everything links together. Perhaps there is a little grumpiness about the likes of the BBC & Flickr issuing the new apps in IOS only when it's not the biggest platform these days. Inventing new fancy words for things that exist to make them sound sexy and new just bores me. Anyway life goes on apple makes money the world will go round.
What's also interesting is how obsessed many non-Apple owners seem to be with Apple products.
Apple owner here. Does that allow me to criticise when I'm prepared to look at something without putting on my rose tinted iSpecs?

Its like the STW atheists' obsession with religion - distinctly odd. Going back to OP, I am surprised at each of the problems listed. To me ipads have been successful because they have a clear market segment and deliver a product that hits that segment's needs very, very well. I am normally a real laggard re anything techie, but was an early adopter of Ipads.....no disappointments at all apart from original cost. I get tremendous satisfaction from it mutliple times a day. Why, because it works and does what I need brilliantly.
Yup, feel free aracer - not denying there are issues - certain things massively frustrate me about Apple, but generally I find their stuff very well thought out and reliable. I think their marketing creates a false impression that everything is totally perfect every time, but then who believes everything you are told by advertising?
Perhaps there is a little grumpiness about the likes of the BBC & Flickr issuing the new apps in IOS only when it's not the biggest platform these days.
The practical reasons for this have been gone over many times - more devices/versions of Android makes development/testing a much bigger job. One of the advantages of Apple's approach. No point moaning about the BBC when it's a fundamental issue with your choice of device.
I'm trying to convince my wife to get an iPad for the house, and so far she's resisting on the grounds that she doesn't want to be yet another Apple sheep. Sort of understandable,
Irrational purchasing decisions are the norm. Look at white jeans, softroader vehicles and superdry clothing for example.
I get tremendous satisfaction from it mutliple times a day.
Steady on, I'm not sure that's healthy.
Grum - I thought that might need an edit, but had more faith in my fellow forum-ites!!! 😉
I think that for me a 5 inch or 6 inch phone would be ideal. Then jump up in size to a laptop with real key board, printer drivers and proper photo editing software
This. I find my Galaxy Note 2 fine for daytime stuff and is still pocketable. Laptop for other stuff.
Daughter has an iPhone 4 and I have no idea why anyone would want one of those horrible things either. Nice enough to look at, but it ends there for me. Dislike iTunes and dislike the UI. Just my opinion though, no problem with people who do like them.

I don't think I have seen any Microsoft advertising featuring the 'blue screen of death' ?
Daughter has an iPhone 4 and I have no idea why anyone would want one of those horrible things either.
Again, why has it provoked such a strong reaction of disgust? I really don't get it. I love my IPhone 4S - it's a great bit of kit - but you'll not see me slating Samsung Galaxy or Google stuff. I'm sure they're also very good. 😕

Not intentionally..
Again, why has it provoked such a strong reaction of disgust? I really don't get it. I love my IPhone 4S
But you say you love yours? 🙄
Yes I 'love it' ie I think it's great. However I don't feel the need to denigrate other devices in order to feel better about my choice.
Don't really see where the need is for the eye roll smiley TBH - pretty obvious distinction between those two things. Nice selective quoting too.
I've used one and really don't like it. I think it's horrible. Simples
Its funny though, check all the reviews and they're pretty glowing in general - probably millions of happy customers out there. But it's 'horrible'? Really? Or just not quite to your taste? Again, some people just seem very keen to prove they're not 'sheeple'.
ALL of these recent high end smartphones are absolutely amazing devices IMO, yet the number of people moaning on about how one is better than the other (which means the other one must be AWFUL) is just ridiculous.
Why is Apple's share price falling (genuine question)?
Why is Apple's share price falling (genuine question)?
Increasing competition from Android platforms and worries that without Jobs they'll return to their old less profitable ways?
Is it really a hard concept to grasp? I don't like it. I didn't like the UI on her iPod touch. Similarly I had a Nokia N97 mini and I hated that with a passion.
iPad's are a bit 'Ford Mondeo' really - pretty good at what they do, but awfully common 😀
Why is Apple's share price falling (genuine question)?
Profits, although substantial, were not as high as expected.
Not going to get an iPad, despite being an avid iPhone user. Can't see the point, I have tried a few types too, Apple, Android etc.
I was talking about this to my wife last night - I think some people buy things like that and the stuff they can do gives them more to do. I can imagine that if you use one for work then it's pretty useful (a friend of mine is a computer animator and it's pretty much essential for him in so many ways).
My iPhone does pretty much anything I need to be done on the internet so I don't need another device letting me do new tasks better and easier that I was never doing in the first place....... 😉
My iPhone does pretty much anything I need to be done on the internet so I don't need another device
I spent a couple of years using the iPhone as my "sofa surfer" device. Then I got an iPad.
Now the vast majority of sofa surfing is done on the iPad. (I still use the iPhone for the odd casual read or when I can't be arsed getting up to get the iPad 🙂 )
Plus the tablet means I can read magazines, which you can't really do effectively on the phone.
Great thread guys, just read through it over lunch. Some of apologistic comments are comedy gold. No SD slot? That's a feature, means you can't lose cards! Can't print? Obviously that's a Windows issue!
Fact of the matter is, iPads are really good. Android tablets are very good, bargain bucket devices aside. They both do similar jobs in slightly different ways, and have pros and cons for each. To say one platform is inherently "better" than the other is just brand snobbery.
I have a Nexus 7. Would I swap it for an iPad Mini? No chance. Is it "better"? No, I simply prefer it, it's better for me personally.
I'd say Ipads are much more Audi than Ford.
