have you tried switching it off and then on again

maybe shake it about a bit.

or the old favorite when the CRT tv played up - hit it firmly with your hand.

HTH 😀 😀

it might be still downloading the software, there is a way to check the current progress of downloads but i am struggling to remember the option. Plug ipad in and have itunes open then google how to check progress.

They'll fix it for you just be very nice and praise how much your son loves it. They often just give you a refurbished one free or at a minimal amount.

Is it plugged into a computer or downloading the software straight to the iPad?

It could be the download maybe got corrupted.

I'm not sure it's ages since I had to ask and it was an iPhone.

Download the update from ipsw.me. When done enter DFU mode

Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable.
With iPad on.
Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button but keep holding the Home button.
After about 15 seconds you will be alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode.
Make sure the device screen is blank and no logos are present. It should be recognized by PC and drivers installed. iTunes will say found iPad in DFU mode. Hold shift hit restore, browse to the downloaded ipsw, click it and hit ok, wait. Report back.

I have a similar problem - I have an old iTouch that is in Recovery Mode and I am unable to install the software but current iTunes doesn't support it meaning I need to get the software on the damn thing before I can use it.

Any suggestions on how to get it on?

Try a different USB port and a different cable if possible. If there's another PC somewhere try that. Is iTunes up to date?

Genius bar conclusion was that its buggered.

Offered refurb for £150 and hand back old one or buy new mini 2 and keep old one. Went for new one
