Not bothered about the thinner Ipad2 - just really for internet and basic functions really.
Are they durable etc? I had a Ibook G4 for almost 10yrs before the harddrive died so thinking should I buy a new hard drive (Toshiba unit) or try something new?
I think they are great....go for it.
iPad 3 should be announced in the next month or so which may drive down prices.
If you are looking at the original iPad 1 then remember it doesn't have a front camera so is no use for FaceTime/Skype.
we got one of the originals when it was discounted due to the newer one coming out.
We wanted it as something to browse the web casually as we often had laptops on our knees which became cumbersome. A few months down the line and suffice to say, its been absolutely brilliant. Use it way more than I thought I would.
Even the wife uses it a lot, and has managed to figure out the email on it as well as the calendar.
Most of the time, it sits on its dock plugged into the hifi and acts as a radio streaming off the various music sites on the web.
As for sturdiness ... yeah, I rate it. I certainly dont cucoon it, its got scratches on the back from skidding it down onto surfaces and the like, but the screen is still 100% OK. and its never missed a beat.
Would happily get another one.

I am fully prepared to be dead wrong about this (because lets face it, no-one actually knows) but I really can't believe that they'll launch a new one so soon... 12 months yes, 6 months? No way...
I'm a fan too.
There are some great things you can do with it and with a good speaker set up becomes a very convenient music system too.
My 4 year old reads books on it and has some brilliant learning games too.
Having a search but if anyone comes across any of the first gen Ipads please feel free to nudge me 🙂

Best guess is currently "early 2012" for the actual iPad 3 launch, with the iPhone 4s/5/Shiny being released early October this year.
But yeah, as usual Apple are playing it all very close to their chest.
If the new iPad does have a Retina display then I'll definitely be in the market for one.

Latest I've seen is that the iPad3 is due for release early 2012 so realistically 4-5 months away. But like Helios said it's all rumour and speculation at the moment.
For what it's worth I have the original model. Gets used loads. I took a look at version 2 with a mind to upgrading but decided the new features weren't enough to bother with. If you've the cash handy and fancy it I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I believe the 2012 stuff - just not the rumours that were/are running round that it was going to be launched this October...
I've got the iPad2 - really good. I hated sitting on the sofa with my laptop balanced on my knee - and I can take it easily when I travel to watch films, read and use facetime to call home... Very useful at work too now that the novelty has worn off and it has beomce a tool not a toy...

Definitely get a cheap Tecknet case from Amazon and put it on before you first use it - otherwise the back will get quite scratched
Got an iPad2 and it's fab, get plenty of use. I wouldn't bother with the 1st gen as there are few things that you may well end wanting to do but can't... such as full mirroring to a Tv via AppleTV.
