Ok..i'm late joining the tecnological revolution. With our slight re-arrnaged home IT set up it has now become essential to have access to internet in the lounge via a tablet.

We have PC set up at home and Macs at work. I use Iphone but only the very basic functions. Reluctant user of itunes on the PC. Dont have apple tv nor do we stream anything from PC to TV - lead a fairly simple life in the technological sense.

Anyway, i'd like a tablet for surfing, kids games (5 yr old), email, maybe e-reading. Not sure how importnat it is to have access on the move, could be quite useful for bus etc. Predominant use will be in around the house.

Ipad is the natural go to product but should i be considering other products? Some people have recommended the Google Nexus 7, based on decent performance, design and price.

Looking for some STW wisdom and for some 20-30 somethings to point me in the right direction!

ta

If it's primarily for the house, then i'd go for the ipad and it's bigger screen. If use on the bus is more important the Nexus 7 might be better (I dont have experience of these btw).

We have both iPad2 and a nexus at home and since getting the nexus I never touch the iPad. I like the smaller size I found the iPad makes your arms ache, plus I can download all the TV series i like for free on the nexus from a down loader. Both great but for me the Nexus is the best.My kids always make a grab for the nexus too. Anyways I have spent to much on apple products and now the love in is over.

I own an iPad and had a play with a Nexus 7 at the weekend and given the choice right now if I owned neither I'd get a Nexus 7.

We use the iPad for games and internet surfing at home only, usually in the lounge occasionally elsewhere.

The Nexus is easier to handle, although that's less of an issue if your sat on the sofa and has a nice textured back that makes it easier to grip. The smaller screen wouldn't be that much of an issue as it's got a decent resolution - but the major part is it's so much cheaper and yet has the same quality feel about it.

Take a look at this:

http://www.reghardware.com/2012/09/26/barnes_and_noble_nook_hd_plus_hands_on_review/page2.html

No, experience of it myself, but would be worth considering for the nice screen and ability to add in an extra memory card.

If you have an iPhone and Macs then to me the logical choice is an iPad. I have an iPad 2 that the kids use it loads, guess I have strong kids, and it is very nice but so is the Nexus 7 my brother has.

We have an Ipad 3 and I just bought a Nexus 7 yesterday. Having had iphones and android phones over the years, I much prefer the android OS. My luddite wife prefers the simpleness of Apple but I prefer to tweak and play with stuff.

Hardware wise, the nexus is very slick. The new Jellybean interface is awesome but it's a platform that demands you know all the little tricks and shortcuts. The apple OS is still more user friendly for the casual user. It's superfast and moving between tabs or programmes is quick and smooth. The screen is excellent and although not as high res as the apple retina display, it's still brilliant.

Size wise it's very good. It's easy to hold and the textured back makes one handed (s****) use very easy.

I can see the strengths in both devices, and the weaknesses too, but I will always prefer android to apple and as such the nexus is the winner for me, despite the size difference.

Does the Nexus7 do 3g? If not, it won't be any good on the bus (unless buses round your way have wi-fi).

I use iPads in school and have a Nexus 7 for personal use, but I am 40 so shall remain silent...

(pssst, if you want to be able to mess around with it a bit more, get a Nexus 7, or two for similar money to one iPad...)

My buses have wifi when I enable the wifi hotspot on my 3G phone. Why run two data contracts?

He has an iphone so using it as a wireless access point comes with fees and or complications doesn't it?

Nope.

Your mobile contract may restrict pairing (regardless of device) but an iPhone will happily work as an access point for iPads, Nexus or any other device (as will most other smartphones).

I wouldn't let lack of 3G put you off either device. I got a non-3G iPad specifically because I didn't see the point when I can just pair it to my iPhone.

Not these days, you just need the ISP to enable it. I think.

IIRC, my OH had to change hers on O2 from a "data" tariff to a "data+tethering" tariff, but it's exactly the same price and data allowance, just a setting change upstream.

Like what?

I suppose wifi or bluetooth will burn your phone battery more, but on the other hand - 3g access for iPad ain't free - and why have 2 data contracts when you can only need 1?

Some time ago (and I'm obviously behind the times here) you had to pay an extra tenner a month or jailbreak your iphone to use it in this way.

Not unless he has a contract out of the ark.

iPhone only contracts were from before every phone was a smart phone. Now the terms will be the same for a S3 or an iPhone etc. and this should include tethering.

Been going through the same debate, nexus vs ipad. We will be buying an ipad mainly for the larger screen and user interface, it will mainly used for sofa surfing and showing holiday pictures to elderly relatives...

Any news on if / when there will be a nexus 10"?

Yep the original O2 iPhone-only contracts restricted it. Got changed years ago though.

O2 contracts now include tethering on all smartphones now. it wasnt just a restriction on iphones...

No.

Bluetooth is just a local connection between two devices that are pretty close to each other - think of it as a replacement for a wire between them. It doesn't cost anything on any device (other than battery life).

iPhones (and pretty much any other smartphone) can act as a access point to the internet by connecting to it with their 3G data connection (thus using whatever Data quota you may have on your phone) and then offering that access to other nearby devices via Bluetooth, Wifi or USB.

Back in the day, for O2 at least, I'm pretty sure it was. I remember a time when I could tether with my Android phone but my OH couldn't with her iPhone. I could be wrong but I don't recall ever not being able to use my Android handsets as a hotspot, neither do I remember having to do anything special with O2 to get it to work. Could be wrong, it was a good while ago now.

As others have said though, paying a premium for iPhone tethering is old news, it's not been that way for years.

To get the conversation back on track:

Let me be clear, I don't have a Nexus, so I can't offer proper comparative experiences, but I have heard good things about them.

However, good things about an iPad for me are:

- that Retina display. It really is lovely. Great for looking at photos on and the Singletrack PDF mags are very readable on it.

- size. I have an iPhone so just stepping up a little bit to a 7 inch display seems a bit pointless.

- sharing apps. I've already bought iPhone apps so being able to use them on the iPad too (without paying anything extra) is a bonus. Also it is really nice using some apps on both devices and sharing the same data. (i.e. play a game on the iPhone, then get home and continue it on the iPad exactly where I left off).

- range of apps. iPad still seems to get a lot more apps written for it than Android tablets. (though droid is closing this gap fast).

- simplicity. I really don't want to "tweak" or "mess around" with it. I do enough of that kind of geekery at work - at home I just want something that works with minimal fuss.

Hope that helps.

I'm not sure what to advise you. You don't sound particularly techie - so I'd naturally steer you in an Apple direction, but it also doesn't sound like you get much out of your current iPhone so it might make sense to go for a cheaper device that'll meet your needs just as well.

Presumably when someone thought to ask for it?

Vodafone only recently started to allow it, that said they didn't actually seem to block it very well probably because they couldn't.

Just wanted to jump in on the teathering thing. We have Orange work phones and Orange want £15 extra a month so I can teather my phone. For this I wont get any extra data I will just be able to teather it. Bloody joke. I can't see how it makes a difference to their costs because I would still be using the same data over the same connection via the same phone. All they have to do is tick a box on their computer once. So thats £180 a year for them to tick a box once and I can teather my phone occasionally.

I've had my nexus tethered to my Galaxy S2 today and it's been great. You'd struggle to tell it wasn't on wi-fi. I'm with O2 and it costs nothing extra. I just go into the phone settings and tell it to be a wireless hotspot.

I tether my nexus to my GF's Galaxy S2 and like BoardinBob says works a treat. It's on Orange and doesn't cost anything extra.

Oh yeah, it's a great bit of kit for web, games, apps etc...

I bought a Nexus 7 on the first release and it didn't have Flash (someone did mention you can download a version of it but I don't think I should have to do that, cos' the Nexus doesn't support it)
So, so I sold it only having had it for 2weeks.

Bought an iPad3 (the new one) and all is well with the world. It's simply the best bit of kit for me.

Again you can discount my comments cos' I'm over 40 (just, but still your criteria was for some 20 something hipster)

Why on earth are people STILL going on about this? It's simply not an issue any more is it?

When I first had an iPhone i remember there was the odd time when a website had flash and I couldn't view or use it properly but I can't remember that happening for a year or two at least now
