Hi all,

My daughters iPad Air 3 has broken beyond repair and the insurers have given us cash to sort out our own replacement for it. She uses it for school work and the inevitable and almost unstoppable youtube etc.

Options I am looking at are either a new Air 5 with the M1 chip and 64Gb memory or a refurb Air 4 with the A14 chip but 256Gb memory (this is £60 cheaper).

I know the M1 chip is faster but does it make that much of a real difference for someone who will largely be internet-ing, using Office apps and basically being a teenager with it?

Would appreciate any viewpoints/experiences!

Ta!

£60 extra now will potentially get you an extra year or two in future of support and updates and not be thinking of upgrading. <br />If it were my £60 I’d be getting the faster one regardless of use.

Think big - and blow the budget...iPad pro 12.9", M2 processor, 2Tb, wi-fi and cellular for a bargaintastic £2,679.

I guess the limiting factor is the 64gb, do you plan on downloading loads onto it? Most things now are cloud based but depending on your use it may not be enough?

I’d forget the Air and go for the base model but max out the memory to use your settlement. I use an Air4 and mrsmidlife has a base model current generation and there’s nothing between them in speed or screen for everyday stuff. We don’t do intensive gaming or video processing though. Once in a case, little difference in size or weight, both on USB C connector.

I can't think she'd be downloading huge amounts of stuff and we have a family onedrive subscription to cloud save really big files so I am sort of leaning to Air 5 with 64GB - on the same thoughts as bighairydel re processing power...

I’d go base and lots of memory myself. Running out of memory on an iOS or iPadOS device is a pain in the …

64gb is plenty right now, but it won’t be in 5 or more years time, when they should still be using this device.

Do you have a Select store near you? They only sell Apple stuff but are not an official Apple Store. They give 3 year warranty on all their stuff which is better than Apple give.If you want to you can use their easy upgrade option where you pay monthly 0% and then exchange for a new one after 24 months without paying all the cost or pay it off if you want to keep it.I used this at the store in Huddersfield to change my last iPad  for a newer one. I  can’t fault the store and staff or the or how the easy upgrade scheme works.
