i maimly use my laptop for ebay/stw/browsing,but it needs replacing, would an ipd fit the bill? how quickly does it display pages, what model do i need,??anyone selling one?
Ther was an ipad thread last week that might have most of the info you need.
I haven't used my Mac PowerBook to any degree since I got an iPhone three years ago, virtually everything I used to do day-to-day the phone was more than capable of. I now have a new iPad, my first, a 64Gb wifi/3G one, and it's stunningly fast on wifi; I haven't really had a chance to try 3G speeds yet, and 4G doesn't exist in the UK. The screen is incredible, I have around 1000 photos downloaded from my camera SD cards via the Apple Camera Kit, which I recommend if you take lots of photos.
It's an outstanding ebook reader, and syncs books between itself and the phone beautifully, so I'm always on the right page whichever one I happen to be using, either with iBooks or Kindle apps. I play music from my Mac Mini through my a/v system, and Remote on the Pad is brilliant for selecting music, adjusting volume, etc.
I use iMessage to chat to my g/f every night, and there's a fantastic app called Flipboard that has me wasting FAR too much time on; even more than here. I don't have music on my Pad, I have the Mini, iPhone, and a 160Gb iPod Classic for that.
A work colleague has a MOOG synth app and a sequencer on his and spends hours playing music and recording music via a MIDI link through a mixer in his little bedroom studio, he puts his guitars through his Pad too.
It's a very adaptable machine, I'm sure you'll find yourself doing far more with one than you could have thought possible.
Sustrans have a map of the UK cycle routes which has just been updated, and that is brilliant on the iPad too.
What one you get only you can decide, but get the larges capacity you can afford, you'll be surprised how much stuff you can end up with on it, even with Cloud back-up.
Enjoy.
Would you like advice on your choice of tablet, or would you like someone to advise you on this?
Other tablets are available.
Stw is VERY fast on an iPad (latest version) compared to an iPhone4 using the same wifi network (standard 16gb wifi only iPad)
Other tablets are available, and they're all rubbish
Sent from my iPad 3.
I've turned into one of those awful tragic apple fanboys since getting my ipad 3. Didn't bother with 3G. Ipad is great, icloud, not so much. Other tablets are available but they all suck
Love my iPad3 end of really,
I'm just playing about on my ipad(2- took advantage of the cheaper price!). Nice for web browsing and photos looking...
Have an android phone, but pleased with the pad so far.
I think that the ability to 'swap files' is easier on the android (I.e. more computer like) - you can copy and drag files in android, whereas so far it seems you need to do a bit more/have an app in order to transfer iOS files. Also, I think it'll end up costing a bit more in apps for the iPad than android equivalent?
However, it's all a bit of fun, and despite not having the retina screen, the PDFs I saved to iBooks look sharp enough!
DrP
I love my iPad - Goes everywhere with me.
Apps like Ebay, Facebook, Twitter, BBC News, Sky News, Eurosport, Amazon etc make buying stuff and finding stuff so easy you'd think that that there is no point in having a computer / lap top .... but .....
Is it a Laptop replacement? No in my opinion no.
I work in IT so maybe I'm biased, but as good as it is, when there is requirement to type anything at length (this post for example), doing it on a touch screen is not the same thing!
Sometimes the old fashioned keyboard is still king .... For this reason I have the MacBook Pro and the iPad and I wouldn't be without either

If a keyboard is your only complaint then I think I'd spend £40 on a Bluetooth keyboard rather than £1000 on a Macbook Pro! 😀
I only use my laptop now for image editing from my digi camera and watching dvd/bluerays. iPad is great... and I used to hate apple!
Shameless plug; i've got a black iPad 2 16gb wifi for sale (Just upgraded to the 3) so let me know if you're interested. Excellent condition as I've always used a screen protector, boxed.
The rumour sites keep going on about a smaller iPad; I wish Apple would make a bigger one, so that planning, laying out and designing interactive products was as much fun as using them with a touchscreen. A 21-inch widePad, that's what I want. Is that the next iMac I wonder?
Only keyboard complaint I have is that you have to call up a different view to get common punctuation, unless there's some shortcut that I'm unaware of.

A useful one is double space with turns into full stop + space.
Also you don't need to switch keyboard view completely, you can press down on the "123" key, slide across to the punctuation key you want, then lift off.
The dictionary also adds a lot of common apostrophes for you automatically (e.g. type dont and you get don't, wont = won't, Im = I'm etc) but sometimes that can be a bit frustrating when you don't actually want an apostrophe (e.g. ill = I'll, its = it's) 👿

It's not the same at all! I tried! it's actually quite a faff.
It's not a complaint, I love my iPad! Its just not a replacement for a laptop
I've got an iPhone 4s, ipad2 and iMac......the iMac hardly ever gets used, iPad follows me round the house and is great for sofa surfing, iplayer, flipboard erc. iPhoto and iMovie are amazing cheap essential apps.... Nothing comes close on Android to these 2 apps alone!
Right sod it. Just ordered a 64GB "new iPad" (aka iPad 3) from John Lewis.
Pick up from tomorrow. Yay! 😀
Nice good you've gone for the 64gb, you won't be disappointed
New iPad is a fantastic bit of kit!
Glad I went for the latest one.
Graham, get Flipboard when you get it, it's a brilliant app for all sorts of stuff, a proper time waster.
+1 for Flipboard
thanks for the advise all,THEROADWARRIOR-yes im interested, please emailme lesreynolds1967@gmail.com,thanks
F*** me
it's an apple love in and there's no one turned up yet to bang on about the benefits of a lesser (andriod - they play flash you know) tablet.
*Sent from my 64gb ipad2
Just discovered my iPhone works as a hotspot for wifi, so no need buying one of those wifi dongle things.
* this being sent from my wifi only iPad... In the car.
