My iPad is getting slower to respond and some apps report memory shortages.

Is this just application bloat or can I clean up the iPad to restore it. I notice when typing this it is about 3 characters behind on displaying what I type.

Also my browser has recently started diverting me directly to the App Store. Possibly me touching the screen without noticing but definately new behaviour. Does the iPad have a control panel where I can see what processes are running?

some apps report memory shortages

Do you mean a lack of actual storage space or just lack of available RAM?

If your iPad is almost full then that will cause major issues for any app that needs to store temporary files etc.

If it is the latter then you could try killing all the background apps from the task switcher.

can I clean up the iPad to restore it

You can use iTunes to do a full backup (with password), then wipe the iPad and do a full restore. That sometimes sorts out little niggles, especially after iOS updates - but it may also achieve nothing.

I notice when typing this it is about 3 characters behind on displaying what I type.

Yeah I get that sometimes on my old phone (4s) but less so on my iPad.

my browser has recently started diverting me directly to the App Store.

That's usually due to snide adverts on web pages which cause the redirect, either when pressed or worse just do it automatically.

They get paid per hit so they don't care if they piss you off.

resetting network settings can speed it up. No idea why.

I have an iPad 2. It is responsive enough for some things. I notice my SO's iPad 2 is notably faster. Both have iOS9.1 installed.

Seeing the release of the last bunch of iPads I realised why mine seemed so slow. The performance of the processors (CPU & GPU) has improved dramatically over time. I couldn't find the slide that was shown on the keynote that compared iPads of each generation but this has some comparison data.

I did a full factory reset on mine and put back on the dozen or so apps I actually use. Much snappier now.

My iPad 2 was fine until I upgraded to ios9.1 -now it 's slow and laggy as hell.
I guess I should've learned from my years with Windows - never upgrade over the old o/s, full rebuild to upgrade every time.
