I have read of and know loads of people who had trouble with this when it first was released - losing apps/photos/data etc as well as bugs in various functions after upgrading.
Are the problems sorted or is it better to wait? Thanks in advance.
I wouldn't
Theres no major change from iOS4 anyway.
I did. No problems. Better text, email etc notifications. Slightly laggy inputting text on this forum now, but that seems to be the only negative.
Theres no major change from iOS4 anyway.
Superficially maybe, but there's a whole raft of changes behind the scenes. Massively improved the way it functions with lots of apps, you can wirelessly back up to the cloud etc etc. Probably the most significant update since iOS1 originally appeared on the first iPhones!
And as stated above, only negative so far is the laggy text input that is exclusive to this forum only! Weird one that...
went smoothly on my 3GS and 6 iPads. 'no major differences'? Aside from wireless iTunes syncing, backup of phone to iCloud, non-SMS messaging for folks with Apple IDs etc
Wireless syncing is ace.
Typing being really slow and the return of the old-cached-pages bug is annoying.
Take your pick...
I like it - especially once I'd turned off the time zone thing
- see here

but I expect 5.1 will be along soon enough, so you could always wait for that
No problems here - all worked fine and plenty of improvements. The ability to create folders for photos is well overdue!
Can't say I notice any extra battery drain. I do have all notifications turned off though.

Yup. None at all. :|
Wireless syncing is ace.
When they say wireless they mean that you still have to plug it in to a power source. So by wireless they mean not wireless. 😕
Syncing iCal with iCloud duplicated all the entries in my Calendar and when I turned it off they stayed there. I had to go through every entry and delete 1 of the 2. When I then switched iCloud/iCal sync off it removed the other entry and left my calendar empty.
I think you can guess what I think of the latest iOS.
Don't get me started on OSX Lion. 🙁
Don't get me started on OSX Lion.
You're on a roll, go on, start.
When they say wireless they mean that you still have to plug it in to a power source.
Given how often a smartphone (or in this case an ipod touch) needs charging that's a lot more often than it gets plugged in to the computer!
It's wireless enough for me... 🙂
Had no problems updating a 3GS, 4G and iPad 1.
It's wireless enough for me..
Ha, ha, fair enough.
I just love the way Apple market things. My TV also wirelessly receives television programs. All I need to do is plug in the aerial and power cable. 😉
Note: I am one of the suckers that buys this stuff so shouldn't really complain.
My ipad is new so it only needs charging once a week. Syncing wirelessly sounds amazing and very useful. So does the ability to organise photos into subfolders.
If you upgrade and it all turns to shit is it easy to go back to the old installation?
Sorry for the dumb questions but I'm an Apple newby. I can get my PC out of all kinds of mischief but I am lost on an apple 😥
I upgraded my Ipad on friday and lost all stored emails
or at least dont know where they are
Apart from the wierd laggy typing on here, I've had no significant issues, and lots of advantages, like the new notification system, which is much better than the horribly intrusive big blue box that used to block what you were doing until cancelled. The only issue I had was with email, in that I'd deleted many, many emails from the phone, but not got around to deleting them from Mail on the computer, and the whole lot got downloaded again. I had to go and delete all the rubbish in the end. Not before time, really. I followed the advise regarding the time location issue, but TBH, I've not noticed any battery issues over and above normal drain through heavy usage. I have noticed one really odd little thing; I have a whole load of symbols and dingbats in my notes app that I can c'n'p when I need to, like proper fractions, for example, and when I went to copy one the other day some had magically become coloured proper little icons, instead of just black and white. Obviously a little update snuck it for the fun of it. Don't know if they translate into being posted on a forum though, but I'll try for fun:
[edit] nah, didn't translate across, maybe it just works across iOS devises.
The latest version of Safari makes it worth while for me. Rarely used the browser in the previous version, but now it acts almost like the PC version, it's pretty good.
Haven't had any problems.
I did sync and backup first.
However I given the choice again I would have bought a MacBook Air. It's no more faff to carry around. The iPad needs to shrink before I buy another.
Slightly laggy inputting text on this forum now, but that seems to be the only negative.
This is really irritating me though to the point i wont post using my phone.
Has anyone used it on other forums > Do you get same issues? Could it be this site?
EDIT:
Just tried using this site http://www.typeonline.co.uk/typingspeed.php and typing into the window is perfectly fine and there is no lag.
Can other people do some testing - im starting to think its just STW that im having text input issues with. Not a massive amount of discussions online and i would imagine if it was all safari input to pages it would be all over the web.
Other sites dont get the delay - google search window for example, the one i listed above etc.
I dont use any other forums to test it.
I like the new landscape calendar
When they say wireless they mean that you still have to plug it in to a power source
Not sure that's right - I'm able to sync mine, both from iTunes on computer and from the phone itself, without it being connected to a power source. I think what the bit about power source means is that when you connect it to a power source, it'll search for your iTunes library and sync automatically, without being told to
There are several other sites I go on where I reply, like boingboing, Kate Griffin's blog, MacDailyNews are the main ones, and none of those give me any issues regarding lag. It's an odd issue. It hasn't stopped me from posting, but it's a pain in the butt.
IOS 5 is great. After all, that passcode you type to protect everything you hold dear just gets in the way anyway.

Agreed. Just go into iTunes and click sync. Or select sync now on the phone. No need to be plugged in to power.
samuri - MemberIOS 5 is great. After all, that passcode you type to protect everything you hold dear just gets in the way anyway.
For many users, that application will be Mail - which gives potential attackers access to a huge amount of private information often including bank details and addresses, searchable via the application.
That's some serious scaremongering, lets be honest if you store your bank details in email, then your also likely to be a person who writes your pin code on the back of your cards with feltip and leaves a spare key under a plant pot by your front door, a possible ipad hack should be the least of your worries.
You're not thinking like a malicious individual.
If I have access to your email address, I can request a reset password for any account that you use it for. ebay, paypal, amazon, frilly knickers.com...
iPad's cache login credentials in exactly the same way a computer does, and lots of people ask them to do it. Normal people, who think they are security concious. After all, it's all protected by their login pin.
And really, if I had access to your ipad, I certainly wouldn't keep it. You'd get it back, right after I'd dropped a few little bits and pieces on there.
Personally, I think Samurai has been hacked himself. I can see no other valid reason why someone would link to a tech story on the Daily Mail, when you could link to El Reg etc.

Eeewww!
Has anyone used their phone elsewhere to test the text input yet?

I have laggy text input on most websites with iOS5. It's very annoying.
Revived thread as the text input is p'ing me off here. I haven't noticed it elsewhere
IOS 5 here on my iphone 4, seems absolutely fine inputting text.
I'm occasionally seeing a lag when I start typing the first few words, but it seems to sort itself out if I just carry on.
(iPhone 4 / iOS 5)
I got very annoyed at the battery life after I upgraded, then was recommended to turn off Spotlight indexing. Worked like a charm.
Since then it has been fine, with only minor lagging when loading things on my 3Gs
It's brilliant...
except it has screwed up text entry on the NHSnet webmail browser in my iPad and I have to save messages every 100 or so characters to unfreeze it... 👿
iOS 5.0.1 is out today.
Available as an over-the-air update (via WiFi) or through iTunes.
Claims to fix battery issues and the bug with Documents stored on iCloud.
I installed that on my jesusfone4 and I'm now pregnant.
I did the 5.0.1 OTA update on my 3GS last night and it seems to have improved responsiveness a bit. Also only took a few minutes - I'm guessing they no longer send out the whole image, just the patches. Now if only they'd do the same with iTunes.
