I've been using iOS phones for about 5 years but have just bought an Android phone. I'll be unboxing it tomorrow and seeing how I get on.

Yup, I've had iPhones etc since they were released, now seriously considering moving to someone else. Did they not think that testing would be a good idea? It's not like it has to work on a massive range of hardware or anything.

No issues with 3 iPhones in this house or the 2 iPads.

Replying on an iPhone 4S running iOS8.

Seems okay here. Only major recurring bug I've noticed is that I sometimes get weird glitchy scrolling and jumping when I'm trying to select text.

What other issues are there?

For perspective, I'm a bit of a fanboy with a big iMac a MacBook a couple of iPads and s few iPhones in the house. The update has negatively effected two iPhone 4s and a IPad mini.
All devices are obviously struggling to cope with the update, crashing, scrolling jerkily and just generally being crap. Prior to the update they worked fine.
One of the mobiles is under contract so we need to continue to pay for a device that doesn't work and another O use for work. ......tbc as it's about to crash.

Random freezing. Random crashing. Weird scrolling behaviour. Can't do copy/paste sometimes. Keyboard lag. Dodgy autocorrect.

Oddly, some apps are fine - Safari is the worst, others are variable.

I'll be picking up an Samsung 4/5 in the next couple of days because I've been patient, were on v8.2 but it's still fubard. What's annoying is that despite these being really expensive bits of kit neither Apple or retailer feels responsible for killing my device .

This is one of the reasons I hate apple - built in obsolescence, older but perfectly fine hardware rendered unusable by 'upgrades' and no way to downgrade other than buggering about jail breaking.

Jumped to WP and thought the same had happened after latest Cyan update but after a quick reinstall my £90non contract Nokia is fine again.

That seems a bit churlish to me. You didn't have to upgrade and there were plenty of sources saying ios8 would run badly on older hardware. Likewise Apple didn't need to support the older 4S hardware, they could have just ignored it.

Phones have got a fair bit more powerful over recent years:

[img] [/img]

Makes sense that newer OSes should use (and require) some of that power.

Or by the same argument should modern PCs still just use DOS ?

IOS8 running fine on 4S, 5, 6 and iPad Mini

Apple has IMO been outstanding at keeping older devices current. My old iPad1 is stuck on iOS5 bit its not that surprising given hoe much the hardware has moved on

Didn't have to upgrade, but it's strongly encouraged, and if there was a problem with older hardware then it'd be simple for the upgrade to be disabled for older devices - my old iPad 1 hasn't had an upgrade for ages, for example.

Built in obsolescence is utter bollocks. I have a 2003 PowerBook that still works fine, we have a G3 and G4 Mac desktop machines at work that still work, one is still in use as a server, that machine is now over ten years old. My old iPhone 3 is still in use with a mate, my iPhone 4 is upstairs and still in use, and several old iPods dating back five or six years are still in use; a mate has two iMacs, one an 'anglepoise' model, the other around six or seven years old, both still functioning. iOS devices aren't designed to be backdated in the OS, but it can be done, and seeing as the majority of owners upgrade every two years, most people couldn't give a toss.
There are plenty of people happily using Apple ][c's.
I'm having some issues with my nearly three year old ipad, and my over two year old phone, but the phone will be going in a couple of months anyway.
And I can live with the pad, most of the issues I reckon will disappear; they shouldn't have happened, but shit does, unfortunately.
If this was Android, I wonder just how much effort Google could be bothered to put into sorting it?

I haven't noticed. too many issues with ios8 on my iPad mini retina.
The only one that springs too mind are the buttons being unresponsive on safari. I press the new tab or bookmarks button and nothing happens, I have to close safari in the multitask menu before it'll work again.
I don't like the os that much, as it seems to be ios7 with a few half baked features bolted on.

In theory Apple's approach of keeping devivices on the latest OS until that device really isn't up to it and then dumping it is a good thing for owners of Apple tech. It ensures that for as long as possible your old hardware can run the latest apps and games etc. the trade off is it may be a bit slow because the hardware isn't up to it. Something like 95% of Apple devices in use will be able to run iOS 8.

By contrast maybe less than 5% of Android phones will get Lollipop.

The issue is Apple seem to have cocked up a bit with iOS 8 and it's a bit too buggy. I bet they announce iOS 8.1 today though. And the beauty of the Apple approach is that every 4s and iPad mini will get the update if people want it.

You don't have to. I saw a colleague with a 4S running what looked like iOS 5 the other day and it hadn't exploded or anything.

Oh, and the really annoying one that only affects my iPhone - constantly detecting a single home button press as a double press.

And one that happened in the previous sentence - no, iOS 8, if I type "the" I don't want you to autocorrect it to "then", FFS.

Pop into an Apple shop they'll check that out for you, probably fix it for free to if it's an issue.

Safari has been massively unstable for me since I upgraded to an iPad using ios7. It particularly falls over on Facebook when scrolling the page or trying to load in new posts.

Out of five Apple devices I've owned since 1999, only two has been trouble free (my iPod Shuffle). My iMac crashed more than any other PC I've owned combined (due to being shipped with a shonky OS), my iPod Classic 4th gen would randomly skip tracks halfway through intermittently (Apple said there was no issue, loads of people complaining about on forums though), and my iPad Air has the aforementioned Safari falling over issue and touchscreen going crazy (registering loads of false input). If it wasn't for the line of work I'm in, I'd have abandoned them long ago! #firstworldproblems

That's nothing to do with android though as that is up to the handset manufacturers. I think we'll see a lot more android devices get the updates as consumers are demanding it and some manufacturers are announcing upfront the timescales for updates.

I have a 6 plus and I'm quite disappointed with it. I went with apple about 4 years ago because normally they just work unlike the Nokia N96 I was replacing which I got a refund on as it was unusable.
I have had a 3g, 4s, 5, 5s and now a 6 plus. All the others have been excellent but this new iOS is rubbish. So many bugs.
The worst thing about it though is how the seam between the front panel and side/rear panel catches and rips the hair from my face.
Lastly it’s too big. It’s certainly not a one handed phone even with the double press to bring the screen down.

can you really blame that on apple?

Just shave the area around the ear. You'll still look cool if you're using the iPhone and if not, may I suggest a pair of oversized beats headphones?

So you're saying that it being a huge phone came as a surprise to you?

I did consider it might be a hardware issue, but odd that it would suddenly appear right after upgrading to iOS 8.

Bearing in mind that this sort of thing happens every time there is an update - maybe just don't update straight away unless there is a particular feature you need?

Otherwise wait for all of the other folk out there to update and 'test it' for the software manufacturer and then update when they've issued a couple of stable bug fix updates?

This thread is about Apple but applies to most software manufacturers now. The software is so complex that it can't be fully tested before being released. The early adopters are doing the testing in reality.

Just hang fire for a month or two and upgrade then unless you fancy having a play with the new features or you don't depend completely on the device in question for your livelihood etc.

If it isn't broken - don't fix it is the motto

I like the size for use at home or at work but trying to use it one handed when out and about is very awkward and I don't have particularly small hands. I pre ordered it so never saw one before I bought it but looked at the measurements and thought it would be big but fine.

It's based on your previous conversations on that site/email/contact etc - so I guess the quality of the suggestions depend on how coherently you write. 🙂

The predicted text is a very good now, but from please to the Said miss. However only if you choose to use the wrong suggestions will it look bad.

+1

My 4S has been a nightmare as of late.

Rather than making me want to upgrade to the newest iPhone, it's just made me want to leave Apple. I've had every iphone up until the 5 and have an MPB and other bits of Apple stuff, but fancy a change.

I just bought a Nexus 7 and have been very very impressed, so a Nexus 5 seems like a good idea at the moment. Don't want anything as big as the 6.

If any Nexus 5 owners are thinking of upgrading to a 6, let me know and I'll likely take your 5 off your hands 🙂

Changing a connector standard, after 9 years, isn't that bad.

Plus there are 30 pin > lightning adapters.

And how is that "built in obsolescence"?

The 30-pin connector on my iPhone 4S and iPad 3 still works just fine.

It didn't stop working when they brought out a new connector and they still sell the cables etc for the old connectors.

Updated to 8.1 on my iPad 2 about 30 mins ago.

Wasn't loading fb or any webpages after so turned off and on again, now just frozen on initial black screen with white logo.

My ipad 3 is worse after ios8.
Mainly Safari issues - laggy, crashing, unresponsive. Not constantly, but enough to be annoying.
On 8.1 at the moment - hoped it'd be better after that but unfortunately not.
