Presumably there is now an increased charge to the company you were using as an example, else their next version of software would presumably still use google?
Sorry, my post referred to the cost to end users rather than devs producing commercial software.
I like the auto hide thing while on the Internet, makes the screen a bit bigger
Bugger found this post a bit. Did os6 upgrade to find street view gone
Sorry, my post referred to the cost to end users rather than devs producing commercial software.
Yeah, I gathered. I was trying to explain (badly, it seems) that by increasing their prices to devs, they are effectively increasing their ability to leverage more and more money. As a dev company you pay google a lot of money for their data (an amount now out of reach of some companies it seems), then you have a markedly superior product to market. Desirability goes up, more people pay, more...
EDIT @Jamie's EDIT: That rather illustrates the point. Apple didn't want to pay google and wanted to go their own way. Samsung now have a very big advantage over the iPhone, and Apple will have to pay a heck of a lot to make their maps better than google, or pay an equally large amount of money to grovel back to them...
EDIT EDIT EDIT: Bloody ninja editing!
I use a cycle trainer (tacx) that is now charging £30 per year for the google earth plugin - seems a huge amount for having a minor function on their program, they claim that is what google is charging them, which seems an exorbitant charge.
Searching is absol crap on the maps now - apparently in suburbia we now have 2 coffee shops within 50 yards of me - I wonder in the house owners know , thank god I can still use google maps on safari
he GPS logging software I use on the Mac, Rubitrack, is losing Google maps in the next big upgrade, and switching to OSM. Which means I have gone from seeing what trail I just run, to what city I was near...if I am lucky.
If OSM is crap near you then instead of moaning about it, get stuck in and improve it!

OSM is often a LOT better than Google maps, as this feature request for Endomondo points out.
Getting back to the OP: quietly LOLing at all the folk only just discovering they had Street View. 🙄 Wonder what other handy features they are entirely unaware of? (Find My iPhone, iTunes U, geofencing, etc)
iTunes U, geofencing, etc)
Do tell...
(in my defence, I've only had the thing a couple of months)
Apple really seem to have cocked this up....their first attempt at integrating a mapping and navigation system into iOS and its a shambles.
There are some amusing 'Apple maps fails' memes doing the round already, places spelled incorrectly, locations showing in the sea, Apple's much hyped 'flyover' view showing landmarks that are unrecognisable.
Shouldnt laugh really but i'm gobsmacked a company that trades on its devices being so 'intuitive' could release such cack....it all looks so naff and hurriedly thrown together.
The Statue of Liberty....obviously:

iTunes U: basically there are hundreds of university/college courses available with video lectures, texts and coursework. Many of which are free and available through the "iTunes University" (iTunes U). It is a huge other source of material for iPhones/iPads that many people overlook - install the iTune U app and dive in.
Geofencing: when you set reminders (in the Reminders app) you can "geofence" them, which means set them so you are reminded when you arrive or leave a certain location (e.g. remind you to pick up milk when you leave work).
Getting back to the OP: quietly LOLing at all the folk only just discovering they had Street View
Then reusing to upgrade so they don't lose something they've only known about for 24 hours. Yup made me laugh .
If OSM is crap near you then instead of moaning about it, get stuck in and improve it!

Right-o. I will just hop in my satellite and start taking some hi-res aerial photographs, as that is the feature I was referring to.
Then reusing to upgrade so they don't lose something they've only known about for 24 hours. Yup made me laugh .
Heck, I'm laughing at myself over it
What I'd really like to see now is Microsoft step up to the mark and start offering Bing Maps on iOS, ideally with StreetSide (their version of Street View). That would give Google some pause for thought.
What I'd really like to see now is Microsoft step up to the mark and start offering Bing Maps on iOS, ideally with StreetSide (their version of Street View). That would give Google some pause for thought.
A tweet I stumbled across this morning suggest that a Bing app (possibly including OS map data since they own Streetmap now) might be in the offing).
If Maps is as cack as everyone says, I might hold off on the iOS6 upgrade until google maps app is available as an option. The rest of the iOS6 features don't excite me too much.
I struggle with long sentences, but...
The single most useful thing for me will be the ability to add photos as attachments whilst writing emails. I've lost count of the amount of times I've started writing an email- often replying to one and thought, "ooh I'll send a picture, oh bollox I can't, I need to go to pictures and send it as another email"
Don't like the look of the maps either, and from a quick play on the way to work this morning turn by turn directions appears to be pants (on a 3Gs). Will see what its like on ip5 on Saturday... but I suspect I will still be using the tom tom app.
Well I'll still be upgrading.
As mentioned before there are plenty of alternative map apps, many of which display Google Maps, so the only thing missing would be StreetView which I don't exactly use regularly anyway.
've lost count of the amount of times I've started writing an email- often replying to one and thought, "ooh I'll send a picture, oh bollox I can't, I need to go to pictures and send it as another email"
Erm.. you don't need to do that. 😕
Just go to Photos, select and Copy the pictures you want, go to your email and Paste.
Heck, I'm laughing at myself over it
Hehehe was amusing.
The Maps thing is poo but never used it very much, Safari tweaks are nice, the email ability to add photos is long over due, twitter now seems impossible to follow conversations, panorama add on for camera is well over due and now I have better apps anyway. There's some nice features and sure it's fixed a few things hidden away and causes no real problems so can't see the point holding off.
Apple really seem to have cocked this up....their first attempt at integrating a mapping and navigation system into iOS and its a shambles.
I suppose, if we were being charitable, it is their first attempt.
....yup. I got nothing.
Erm.. you don't need to do that.
Well there you go GrahamsS that just proves how intuitive iOS is... 🙂
Anyhoo iOS6 is no great leap forward that is for sure
the email ability to add photos is long over due
You can do that in iOS 5 - see above
I suppose, if we were being charitable, it is their first attempt.
Well, I suppose Google Maps was fairly appalling when it started*, and Street View was a feature that came along a lot later BUT times have moved on and Apple are looking a bit silly at the moment.
* (it is still far from perfect: I often see POIs on the map a couple of km from where they actually are)
Well there you go GrahamsS that just proves how intuitive iOS is...
Yeah, admittedly Copy and Paste is a pretty obscure interface technique.
I don't think it'll catch on. 😆
The new panorama on the camera is brilliant.
Not that you couldn't get an app to do it previously, but its very easy to use straight from the camera.
The new panorama on the camera is brilliant.
Be interested to see how it compares to Microsoft PhotoSynth which is my current go-to app for panoramas.
GrahamS - can you clear something up for me please - I'm preety sure I can't create a geofenced reminder via Siri - is that correct?
Getting back to the OP: quietly LOLing at all the folk only just discovering they had Street View. Wonder what other handy features they are entirely unaware of? (Find My iPhone, iTunes U, geofencing, etc)
Don't really use streetview much anyway, so I've updated. I wonder what other [s]handy[/s] features you are entirely unaware of? 🙄
New maps app is indeed rubbish though - what were they thinking?
You can do that in iOS 5 - see above
I'm aware of that way and others but it should be a case of just adding rather than having to flick between Apps.
Be interested to see how it compares to Microsoft PhotoSynth which is my current go-to app for panoramas.
It's not as good as 360 which is better than Photosynth if that that helps.
Just go to Photos, select and Copy the pictures you want, go to your email and Paste.
Cool - hadn't thought of that, found the whole adding photos mid email a right pain.
Geofencing: when you set reminders (in the Reminders app) you can "geofence" them, which means set them so you are reminded when you arrive or leave a certain location (e.g. remind you to pick up milk when you leave work).
Ahhhh. Thanks. 😳
That's really handy but form the name "geofencing" it seems like IT gobbledygook and
I'd never work it out for myself. I've never really used the reminders myself, only the calendar...... Until now. 🙂
GrahamS - can you clear something up for me please - I'm preety sure I can't create a geofenced reminder via Siri - is that correct?
Dunno, never used Siri (iPhone 4 here). Would seem an odd thing to miss out though.
New maps app is indeed rubbish though - what were they thinking?
Don't think they had a lot of choice to be honest. Original contract with Google was terminated (hence no built-in YouTube or Google Maps apps).
Seemed fairly obvious that Google were holding back features from the iOS maps that had been in the Android apps for ages (e.g. turn-by-turn in Google Maps) so the only way around that was for Apple to find a new source for Maps.
My 3GS seems to be a bit more responsive since the upgrade, that may be partly because its had its first restart in months but the last upgrade definitely made it slower. Don't think I'll be using the map's satellite images to check out local routes though:

The grey bit on the right is because it won't display that part of the world in that "high" a resolution, not because it's unsafe to go that close to Chesham 😕
GrahamS - can you clear something up for me please - I'm preety sure I can't create a geofenced reminder via Siri - is that correct?
Yes you can, but need to setup place names such as Home or Work.
Don't think I'll be using the map's satellite images to check out local routes though:
That is crap! 😀
But you can still happily look at Google Maps satellite images in dozens of apps, so no real biggy.
e.g. MotionX GPS can display Google Road/Satellite/Hybrid, Bing Road/Satellite/Hybrid/Terrain, and OpenStreetMap Road/Terrain.
So what is the best app for me to get to replace the Maps functionality that's gone then ?
Never used it for Navigation, but I used it for streetview, satellite images, and planning driving times.
Geofencing: when you set reminders (in the Reminders app) you can "geofence" them, which means set them so you are reminded when you arrive or leave a certain location (e.g. remind you to pick up milk when you leave work).
Just tried this twice. It failed to recognise me leaving work and failed to recognise me arriving home. On closer inspection, it appear to consider both work and home addresses to be different locations from where they actually are. Which isn't helpful.
On the plus side, if I'm ever invited round to our antisocial neighbours' house, I'm sure it will happily remind me that geofencing works 🙄
While Apple Maps is obviously a bit of a backwards step from Google in terms of coverage and features, the base mapping does look wonderful. Since its vector based it scales perfectly and quickly. It might be confirmation bias but it seemed a lot faster to load on celular data than google was.
Once they start getting and intergrating user feedback I'm sure it will improve very quickly, but to get to this point Apple needed to rip off the band aid and release the thing.
If anyone can do it Apple can as to get decent maps it needs the one thing Apple have in spades. Money.
Much the same really that Maps is a big disappointment, not worried about street-view as only tend to use that on my Mac or PC, but the Satellite images are very dark and grainy compared to Gmaps.
Looking forward to the improvements that will happen.
Another IOS6 query, how to share reminders now??
With who?Another IOS6 query, how to share reminders now??
By default iOS reminders sync between devices via iCloud.
If your mail server supports reminders syncing with Outlook for example then you set that up as you would a mail account.

With IOS5 i could share Reminders Lists, only ones i selected (like shopping list) not others (like buy more bike stuff) with my Missus to her iPhone and using her apple ID, can't see the option anymore
Looks like you can only share lists if you have a MAC

This. It's a bit of a dissapointment at the moment, but with a 6.1 or 2 or whatever release, or even iOS 7, I can imagine they will get it pretty damn good. In the meantime, it is inevitable that any day now Google will release a Maps app for iOS. OK, not quite the same as built in, but will do the job. There are rumours that it will sync between devices so you can look up directions on the PC and then they will be available on your iPhone when you actually need them - pretty cool stuff!
Yes you can, but need to setup place names such as Home or Work.
Ahhh... My calendar was defaulting to my Outlook calendar - which is where I keep tasks and reminders - I apparently have to use the iCloud calendar before I am allowed to set geofencing.
It can set reminders now - we'll see hoe good they are.
I wish they would let you place or edit a map pin for locations. Instead it forces you to use post code centres - I don't kno about any of you but I don't live at the centre of my post code, nor do many people I know - so I'm going to continue to be directed to the wrong end of the road whenever I use Maps. Grrr...
There are rumours that it will sync between devices so you can look up directions on the PC and then they will be available on your iPhone when you actually need them - pretty cool stuff!
Should be easy to do, as you can already do that with the google maps website (i.e. you can save places which then appear on any device when you are logged in to your google account).
My 3GS seems more responsive too. And it had been restarted recently. Pleasantly surprised.
Bit crap that Safari on ipad doesn't do the full screen option, although icloud tabs is nice. :/
Wasn't too worried about removal of YT app, as a knew Google had released one, but I hadn't realised it's iphone only 🙁
There are rumours that it will sync between devices so you can look up directions on the PC and then they will be available on your iPhone
You can already do that with the CycleStreets app.
Plan (urban) bike route on PC, view route on Phone.

which 360 pano app theres loads with that name?
That is one of the few things that hasn't gotten worse with iOS6 maps. It hasn't gotten better though as it was always this crap!I wish they would let you place or edit a map pin for locations
Just discovered something that makes the upgrade completely worthwhile for me - Bluetooth on/off is now at the top of the settings menu rather than buried under "general". Simple thing but an enormous improvement in usability for me. Something I use every time I get in or out of the car, never did understand how Apple got that so wrong! 😀
Its "do not disturb" for me.
Never noticed Rio even when I switched it on earlier in the car. 😳
Something I use every time I get in or out of the car,
Why? It consumes absolutely naff all battery. I leave it on all the time unless I know I'm going to be away from power for days on end (in which case you save far far more by turning 3G off).
Why? It consumes absolutely naff all battery).
It does on my 3GS
ok i'm a bit thick but can anyone tell me how to downgrade to ios5 please i really need to old google maps and the new one is utter pants the worst app i've ever seen. cheers.

You can't.

As above, there are dozens of apps that display Google Maps. The only thing you won't get is Street View.
anyone tell me how to downgrade to ios5 please
Give it a week and they'll be step by step instructions on the web.
Give it a week and they'll be step by step instructions on the web.
Fiver says no there won't.
what makes you so certain?
If you paid for the SDK you could install and uninstall iOS6 Betas on up to something like 200 phones, so I don't see how it's going to be so hard to uninstall it esp with a Jailbreak.
If anyone can do it Apple can as to get decent maps it needs the one thing Apple have in spades. Money.
I don't think they have spent much money on this.
I hate apple products and apple fanbwoys, but looking at this http://theamazingios6maps.tumblr.com/ genuinely makes me want to get one, for sheer entertainment.
For those missing You Tube, the mobile version of their site is much better than the native (or not so native anymore) iOS map. I gave up on the iOS app ages ago.
Glad I started this thread now; I can let you lot upgrade and tell us all how good/bad it is. 😀
Cant you just flash it back to the original OS?
I hate apple products
Wow - that's a pretty strong emotion to harbour over a phone / MP3 player / computer. Your life must be wonderful.
I hate apple products and apple fanbwoys, but looking at this http://theamazingios6maps.tumblr.com/ genuinely makes me want to get one, for sheer entertainment.
Nothing worse than a reverse fanboy.
So........... give me one good reason to go iOS6 on a 4s
Can't see any reason to update, I presume all will stay as it is, and wont lose any functionality?
Just been looking at that tumblr.
This misplacing/misnaming of POIs, landmarks and even entire cities is pretty unforgivable really. 😕
But the 3D stuff, well it's pretty funny, but mainly just a product of how it is created (multiple photos from different directions automatically analysed to try and guess the 3D structure). it's fairly new tech and it is bound to get some bits wrong.
So........... give me one good reason to go iOS6 on a 4s

You can stay on ios 5. Everything will still work, though some apps may choose not to support some features (e.g. they may only offer Facebook login/sharing on ios 6)
what makes you so certain?
Sorry if I was a bit abrupt previously. Unfortunately it has been this way for a while now.
If anything, those who want to downgrade will want to do it now...although it may be too late. The reason for this is every firmware upgrade has to be approved and signed for by Apple's authentication servers. If you are are on iOS 6 and they have stopped signing iOS 5.1.1. then it will not let you proceed unless you have saved the SHSH blobs for 5.1.1 via Cydia, Tiny Umbrella or iSHSHit, the first and last require being JB'ed. The reason people could downgrade painlessly from the iOS 6 beta, was that 5.1.1 was still being signed by Apple.
If Apple is still signing 5.1.1, which will cease very shortly, then people should be able to downgrade NOW, by following the same instructions (use shift instead of option key if you're on windows) as for downgrading from the iOS 6 beta.*
*All this is at users risk etc etc.
@Jamie nobody is laughing at you guys. We are laughing with you, you just can't find us......IGMC
I'm not upgrading, so I can find you just fine. In fact I'm watching you get your coat right now...
All over Twitter this morning,
Yeah, but so is Justin Bieber 8)
So........... give me one good reason to go iOS6 on a 4s
Just used the podcasts app for the first time this morning.
Really a big improvement on listening via itunes.
Previously you had to either sync with itunes on pc or mac to get subscribed feeds, or get them manually with the phone. There are 4 I listen to each week whilst commuting- and every weekend I would have to make a point of downloading the new ones, if I missed one due to hols it wouldn't be available to download the following week.
With the new app you can subscribe on the phone, download automatically and choose which ones to keep- all, unplayed, newest etc. Big improvement for me and will save me a little job at the weekends

Podcast app was available as a download in iOS5, so not a reason to upgrade I'm afraid.

Was it, oh well. I don't tend to go looking for apps much. Better if it just works from the outset.
Having had a faff with the new maps I don't think it's really that bad. OK, no street view, but I never used that anyway ( 😳 ) and the sateelite stuff is crp, but the basic mapping seems fine to me. Ho Hum.. maybe I'm easily pleased? 🙂
