My OH is doing a bit of minor freelancing work and needs to send out invoices. She's been using the invoice2go app but after sending out three invoices she's found that they now want £20 for another 100, or £40 for unlimited use. This strikes me as somewhat excessively priced.

Before she ponies up half her earnings on it, can anyone recommend an alternative? Doesn't necessarily have to be free, just a little less eye-wateringly priced.

Ta.

Oh, should've said, either iDevice or PC-based.

If it is so small-scale can't she just create a Word doc?

Plenty of cloud based accounting apps that would allow her to do v simple stuff for free.

If it's just a few a year, then do it on a word processor package but record in a spreadsheet.

Speaking as a dirty rotten IT contractor, this. Knock up a template, amend for each invoice as appropriate.

KISS

[edit] I could even send you the template I use if you like.

This.

Used Word for +10 years of invoicing - only 2-3 per week as a max though.

That bit actually seems reasonable to me, if it does everything you want in a convenient way, but I guess it does depend how much you're pulling in from said sideline. Otherwise, Word template.

Cheers (and bump for the evening). I'll pass on your comments.

I don't know the whys and wherefores of using / not using office applications TBH, it's not me using it.

The advantages of using a cloud based accounting package is that it will produce an invoice (though some
of the templates look like they were designed by someone like Stoner) - but also record the data for when she has to declare it in Jan 16. Anyway, it's an idea - I use one but I pay around a tenner a month-ish for mine.

It depends if you want more out of it than the invoice itself.

As a bare minimum you can type an invoice in word, but an app or online doo-dah will keep track of customers details, keep track of outstanding invoices, allow you to log your expenses and get reports out with the maths already done when you need to do tax returns etc.

Theres few, and increasingly fewer buy once and keep applications about and either packages are cloud/subscription based or even if they are off-line can still be subscription based.

If those extra bells and whistle help (and they do if you are disciplined in keeping your records of expenses up to date rather than having a panic at ten-to-taxreturn) then most of the online ones have a free trial period. I use quickbooks, DD uses something similar which he might remember to offer you and recommend a friend discount for

I use the free version of NCH Express Invoice. Works fine and has been free for at least 3 years and well over 2000 invoices.

Just found a free one - I haven't delved into it, but it's here: http://www.quickfile.co.uk/

I watched the video - it looks great for something free.

Mine is FreeAgent, but costs over £100 for the year (my accountant gives me a discount covering around half of that as he can administrate it from anywhere and doesn't have to chase my dusty arse around the place) - Cougar would be more than welcome for a discount code, but I think it's a bit more than Madame Cougar wants to spend for a little bit of freelance work.
