Hello

Been tasked with searching for an internet radio for a friend who wants to buy one for her mother to listen to French radio stations from the UK.

It can't be any type of Alexa thing etc, just a 'normal' internet radio which is easy to use for an older person and a reasonable price.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Not sure if you can still get them, I've had a roberts revival dab/wifi radio for must be over 6 years now, never missed a beat.

Wasn't the cheapest, but it's paid off in longevity terms.

Okay, but I'd counter that internet radio on Alexa is very easy: "Alexa, play Kerrang Radio" and Echo Dots are keenly priced, £50 but typically ~£25 if you get them in one of the regular sale events.

I'd agree with Graham tbh too.

Bear in mind if the radio uses TuneIn as an aggregator (which is the giant of the internet radio business) you won't get much non-UK stuff.

Sony and Warner took them to court in late 2019 over music rights where UK people are listening to non-UK stations. TuneIn lost.

My wife was properly annoyed that she couldn't get the usual (Irish) Christmas FM. You can work around it a bit by starting the stream on your phone and bluetooth/airplay it to a speaker but that's not really an oldie-friendly solution.

The TuneIn ruling is a real pain in the bum.

I used to have loads of fun searching for obscure internet radio stations.

Interesting about TuneIn, didn't know that - doesn't help the OP but I now use the VRadio app on my phone, easy to use and finds random stations from, oooo, everywhere, I think.

Is the solution an (old) phone, with radio apps installed, a speaker and a 3.5mm aux cable (or Bluetooth)?

The interface doesn't get much easier than a phone and the selection of apps, maybe even some favourite albums on the phone storage.

I used to use a Logitech Squeezebox which was pretty good in its day, bit of a ball-ache to setup & use though... got to agree with Alexa/Google being the easiest solution (although not personally used either!)

I have one of these

https://www.goodmans.co.uk/heritage-connect.html

you can also use the UNDOK app on your phone to control it, sometimes easier to find a station than on the little interface.

Also does multiroom with other undok devices of any brand.

I can have a look and see if I can choose french radio, any in particular?

Just realised you need French radio.

In that case you'd have to say "Alexa, play ze Kerrang Radio" ideally with a funny hat and moustache

Alternatively, FIP has a great app. 😉

@Graham - thanks. Not sure what station in particular. My friends mother is cracking on a bit (70) and enjoys French radio having lived there for quite a while. We've tried shouting at Alexa but she doesn't like it!

Thanks for the suggestions to far folks.

I've have an Alexa myself and find it simple, but it's not for me I suppose 🙂
