My usual 12mbs internet connection has been running at less than 0.5mbs for a while now. After a wasted afternoon conversing with someone in some far flung country, I got nowhere. Apparently they did a line test (about a dozen times) and couldn't find a problem. I politely declined their offer of a three week wait for an engineer. The guy on the phone seemed indifferent to my threats of cancelling my contract.

So, short of actually cancelling and the long drawn out process of changing providers, I've tried different routers, I've changed the filters, I've tried different sockets around the house - no change.

What are the final avenues - the BT line and the actual service provider I presume. How do I determine the problem?

Cheers

Unplug everything that is plugged into a phone socket, phones, answering machines, sky boxes, extension wiring the lot. Then try the router directly in the master socket, ideally taking the faceplate off to isolate any internal wiring.

However the first question to ask is by 12Mbps and 0.5Mbps do you mean the router line sync speed or the download speed?

As there is a big difference if its the line sync speed then most likely there is fault on the line HOWEVER if you are synching at 12Mbps but only getting a 0.5Mbps download speed then either its congestion on your ISP's network OR the line profile has been changed for some reason for example a lot of errors on the line so they have/or their systems have put you on a really slow profile until the line fault is sorted.

Another thing to try is with a phone connected pick up the handset and dial 1, can you hear any crackling/humming on the line?

If the profile has reduced the line speed is that not reflected by the sync speed reducing?

The simplest thing is if you get get them to reset your line speed so the router and exchange can recalculate the Max speed your line can support.

Of no help but this is why I remain with zen, speak to people who know what they are taking about and not reading from a flow chart.
