Great stuff. Can't go without this if you're talking inspiration:
The last all female band I saw was this lot. Grr 😀
Happy to see some Nina. What a classy, intelligent, clever, provocative, humble and incredibly inspirational woman she was. She could sing and play a bit too.
(Strange Fruit)
Before posting I asked Mrs P (herself a singer) what her favourite song by a woman is - and she replied ‘it’s impossible to answer’. So I said

Though not written by Nina Simone, or any other woman. It's by George and Ira Gershwin.
As for Nina:
Though not written by Nina Simone, or any other woman. It’s by George and Ira Gershwin.
True, but I still consider it ideal for this playlist and will make my case:
Nina Simone's release of "I Loves You, Porgy" and conversations surrounding black representation were contemporaneous. Sarah Tomlinson claimed "while 'I Loves You, Porgy' was one of eleven tracks on her album, it was the only song that had previously been popularised by black women musicians. The song that launched Simone into the public eye was one that fit audience expectations of black women musicianship." (Wikipedia)
Plus. Nina Simone singing it.

Certainly enjoyed Aretha/Mavis and Etta. Here's Etta singing the same song and featuring The Boogie Man (John Lee Hooker), Carlos Santana with Paul Butterfield on harmonica.

Have to include the inimitable Janis Joplin:
