You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Decided to pull the trigger and get my career moving - applied for an apprentice engineering position that will be based out of a completely different office, but within the same nationwide company.
Passed the online tests and have now been asked to attend an assessment day at the engineering office.
For external interviews you would expect to make your excuses and book time off (ie. "I have an appointment, need this day off")...
However in this case would you expect the interview to count as 'work time'?
Interested to hear your experiences/thoughts, thanks!
Have never taken time off for an internal role, good luck

It is in my place but an internal applicant must inform their manager first before applying (unless there is good reason not to in which case inform HR instead). Travel, accommodation etc can also be booked or claimed for like any other work.
Normally with internal stuff your boss gets to sign the forms, in this case probably have a word with your boss explain what you are thinking and why. Am=ny company big enough should cope well with it.
For an internal role I'd hope to have the full support and backing of my line manager who would be assist any opportunity to progress my career. I'd be doing it on work-time, including any prep work. Appreciate I'm lucky enough to work for a company that values their staff quite highly though.
Both internal roles I've applied for and had to travel for an interview/meeting have been on the company's time and them covering mileage expenses. That said it was within the same part of the business with my manager aware & supportive.
Thanks everyone. You've confirmed that my expectations are reasonable. Unfortunately I have a rather unreasonable line manager, so we'll see how that conversation goes..

Use that as extra motivation to nail the new role! Good Luck!
I'd expect your company to support your application with accommodation made for travel and prep. I'd also expect a reasonable employee to have told their line manager they were applying for another post though...

Hmmmmmmmm. I wouldn't take the advice above on face value. Your current LM will probably be asked for his opinion of you (if he/she hasn't already), and so risking a confrontation with them just prior to that, over a few hours off/few quid for petrol, wouldn't be the way I would choose to deal with this.
IMO, this is entirely a company policy question, and so should be directed to HR not your line manager. They will be able to give you the correct answer - rather than the answer they feel like giving.
I've just got out from under (metaphorically) a total bellend of a line manager - in the end I stopped asking him questions like this because he'd just make shit up to suit him. I got promoted 6 months after transferring line managers - something that he'd been telling me was impossible for the past 3 years.
If you need to be away from the work place for more than an hour, take the time off. I work for a big company and we don't always know who has applied for what, and that's on one geographical site.
