No need for double thickness or supporting columns etc. Apparently it takes less bricks than a straight wall and certainly saves trying for all that perfect alignment. From now on all my walls will be wavy.

I love those walls, and yes they do take less bricks.  I think setting them out could be a pain though!

The offset on the top course looks wrong, you'd expect a 50% overlap..

Less bricks than a straight wall? YEAH RIGHT!

Go on..... Someone explain that, then! (without using technical terms like "stretcher", "frog" and "course" to try and hide the blatant disregard for the laws of physics.)

You can't build a single depth straight wall as it's unstable, so you'd normally have to build it two courses deep, or have pillars every metre or so.

Because curves are so much stronger than straight lines, you use less material for the same given strength.

Presumably you need more bricks in a straight wall to stop it falling over in the wind.
The curves give it lateral (?) Stability.

Simon the straight one requires double thickness

im guessing they mean a straight wall with double thickness? the wavy single is stronger than double straight?

EDIT! wow! started typing and 5 replies in before mine hit the site?😄

mowing the lawn in those curves will be a pain. Not sure I'd get the sit on mower in there.

Actually that wavy wall is half a brick thick and traditionally a free standing wall would be either a brick thick or brick and a half thick. Gives you the opportunity of using some really elegant brick bonds as well.
A half brick free standing wall would have to have regular piers at decreasing intervals as the wall height increases. Gets more complicated if you put expansion joints in as well, as you might then use sleeved wall starters and if your engineer is very keen bed joint reinforcement.
I suspect that wavy wall won't meet crowd loading though...
(Edit due to aggressive phone auto correct)

That's lovely - but, yes, a PITA to mow around!

I’m less worried about the mowing than the boundary disputes 🙂

I'm pretty sure the same brickie did my house tbh (I'll never be able to do DIY in a straight building- spent too long adapting to building shelves that fit in 100 degree corners and don't leave a gap against wobbly walls)

My flat sits on a basement that must have been built during a mortar shortage!

Yep, and car panels esp front wings
You can build in strength by folds amd creases

Very quickly - straight walls have to be wide so they don't fall over.

Very marmite look, personally I really don't like them.

What this thread needs now is some input from a top Quantity surveyor who may be able to count a few bricks as a day job😉

He got a job at Tesco, stacking shelves, I'm reliably informed.
