Interesting SPAM, can you explain how?

So I ordered something a few days ago.

Today I get two emails at the exact same time. One is genuine from UPS saying delivery will be tomorrow.

The other says it's UPS but the email is actually 'something @ nvrumvk.us saying delivery failed, please bla de bla

The spam email correctly went to spam but it is clearly no coincidence that they came at the exact same time. How can that be?

Also, I did click on the link, but no more, how bad is that?

It _is_ a coincidence! Even a stopped clock...

Its a bad idea.

In theory it could launch an browser exploitation but fairly low risk so long as you keep the browser up to date and arent of interest to someone with deep pockets. The main problem though is it tells them the email address is live and since you clicked on it once you probably are worth targeting again.

Therefore you should never click on them.

In terms of how it happened I would go with pure chance as well. It would need a major compromise of either UPS or part of the infrastructure and if that happened there are far better and quieter things they could be doing with it.

Obviously wrong and stupid that I clicked it but it was the timestamp that made me click. I should have checked it first.

I don't believe in coincidences that fine. But agree it implies for it not to be a coincidence it implies ups is compromised.

I'll try and be extra vigilant and careful.

I get that you don't believe in coincidence, but all I'm saying is that my spam folder has 2 'UPS missed delivery', 3 'DPD missed delivery', 4 'dhl', and 3 'Royal Mail' from the last week.

Your belief changes nothing.

Coincidences happen and the human brain likes to find patterns.  How many times have you done something and it's not resulted in a coincidence?  It's a big numbers game and conversely the human brain is bad with big numbers.

I was once listening to a song in the car, got up and went into the house and the same song carried on playing.  Except, it was the radio and I'd been listening to a CD in the car.  It happens.  Eventually it pretty much has to.  People win the lottery and the odds of doing so are remote.

‘Royal Mail’ from the last week.

I have a couple of recent Royal Mail notifications... I haven't had a royal mail delivery in nearly 20 years. The nearest depot is 1000 km away, and in a different country.

They never give up.

When a machine is churning out millions of fake UPS emails it's bound to be sent at a similar time to a genuine UPS email a few times a day.

I'm calling coincidence.

I used the report email button to hopefully better train the spam detector or add the  sending email to a block list..... I'm aware this may not be how it works.  IT belongs on the magic science thread.

I'm calling coincidence too

I've had a couple of similar efforts that coincided perfectly with orders. First one I actually rang the shop to ask their sales team if it was legit as it seemed an impossible coincidence

If I get a hinky looking email, I click on the header, then check out the header so it shows the sender, then block that sender.
