Off to Cardiff tomorrow night. Know my way around from days gone by but where’s good to go to eat or drink in the city? Staying over Monday and Tuesday night. Looking for somewhere decent for me and a couple of work colleagues. Any interesting places for decent (quality) breakfast as well as using air bnb.
Really good quality ch8nese would be good. Must be really good though as I’ve got an excellent local here.
Cheers
No one able to help. This place isn’t firing like it used to...
“Know my way around from days gone by”
I wouldn’t rely on that, I’ve lived in Cardiff on/off my whole life and I get lost in the city. Every time I venture in, it’s different!
TBH the Center is pretty well tailored for the Stag / Hen Party crowd these days. There’s a few nice places in the bay and North Cardiff suburbs.
Summer Palace in Llandaff is nice for Chinese.
Bayside Brassiere in the Bay is nice.
The Plough in Whitchurch is nice.
Mowgli’s in Whitchurch if you like Indian.
..
Riverside was a great Chinese, this was a while ago but it is still there.
Chinese - The Happy Gathering (Canton but not that far to walk from the centre)
Food & drinks in one:
Kongs (burgers, drinks, classic arcade games & table tennis) or
Small Bar (various food & good ale selection),
Blue Honey Night Café (Bao & drinks - Also good for breakfast in the day when it's called Sully's)
Turtle Bay (Caribbean food & cocktails. It's a chain though so you might have been)
Mainly food:
Casanova
The Potted Pig
The Meating Place
Madeira's
Thai House
Purple Poppadum (Canton)
Bar 44
Servini's (breakfast)
There are a lot of the more interesting places to eat further out of town as well if you are happy to get a taxi / drive. It's not the best place for food but it's improved hugely in the last 10 years. Tripadvisor is a good place to start but the rankings are all over the place.
Riverside has a good rep. Just moved in to a big new place.
If your looking for different then try "The Klink" to be served by hardened criminals
Not Chinese but Arbennig in Pontcanna is always good as is the Conway - both are only a short walk form town.
The Klink didn't do it for me - felt like I was in a College Training Restaurant but was paying a lot of money for it!
Bristol.

One of my colleagues went there on Saturday. She said it was ok. No alcohol though. We've spent the afternoon talking about The Klink/Clink, which is apparently a swingers club in Newport. 🙂

Point of order, and only because I only found this out the other day, none of the crims who work in the Klink are held at Cardiff Prison, they're all in an open Prison somewhere and get brought in by bus for their shifts -
Ernest Willows.
Still think Le Monde is hard to beat. Mill lane end of St Mary's street. Not cheap but not mental. Just don't let the waiter choose the wine if you respect your wallet.
In the city centre, Citta in Church St is superb (if you can get in), a short walk away is CasaNova near the stadium and Elgano on Cathedral Rd - all three are Italian. Elganos has a better atmosphere at night but food and service is second to none. Bar44 is great for Tapas. Like any city, avoid the chains. Two of the best places to eat in the whole city are Bullys and Arbennig. Both are worth the short walk up Cathedral Rd to Pontcanna. I’m surprised at the suggestion of The Conway (for food) because there are way better places to eat and it wouldn’t be on my list - good pub though. Summer Palace in Llandaff for Chinese is also a good shout. Potted Pig on St Mary St is good - have eaten there many times. It’s downstairs in an old bank vault, so no views and a bit of an echo/noisy if you’re talking/listening as much as eating. The owners have recently opened Milkwood (again in Pontcanna) and it gets good reviews, but I haven’t eaten there personally. Can be pricy too. All of these suggestions are for privately owned astablishments with someone in the kitchen who can cook as opposed to warming food. Arbennig is closed Mon/Tues/Wed night. You won’t go wrong with any of these suggestions, trust me. Enjoy. Cardiff is a fab city. If your trip coincides with the warm continental air and better weather, you’re in for a treat.
Tinners that's a good list. Cittas is good.
I'll check out some of the other ones in your list too!
Agree with advice about avoiding chains, they seem to do little more than take a bag out of a freezer, microwave it and charge 15 quid!
For Chinese which op mentions, my favourite is the new Riverside or the happy gathering. Both are a bit of a walk out of the centre though.
If you fancy the mayhem that is City Road, how about Shaam Nights? It is stunningly decorated with an bespoke irreplaceable Syrian interior and offers some of the best Middle eastern food around. Great service, really friendly. I'd probably book at the weekend tbh.
There is also a great little Omani place further down the road, the Al Wali. Last time we were there it was hard to tell who was who,the owner, staff, kids, passers by all were coming and going all evening. Brilliant food and a more restrained decor than Shaam Nights but unmissable.
Check out the gourmet gorro blog for plenty of options. Ramone's do an excellent breakfast, happy gathering is great for dim sum but check your bill closely, far and away the best Chinese in Cardiff imo is zi's cafe.
I'll throw this into the mix. Its not the best known place but has a growing reputation for those in the know 😉
