Any reason why this shouldn't work?

Not if set up properly. What build? What OS you planning on running? What server app?

Id be waiting until the NUC 2.0 is out, a whole heap of upgrades and improvements over the original. Not just better CPU but ability to run 4k monitors and USB3 headers etc.

It seems overkill to me. Will it just be a file server?

No, it needs to run iTunes. Plan was to run Windows. Alternative is a Mac Mini run headless; agree it's overkill but unlike some alternatives there's no way a NAS/file server would work.

Curious what the point of this setup is over say a cloud based music service like Google drive? Not picking fault or anything genuinely curious.

Less data usage; broadband a bit crap due to distance from exchange; actually reasonably happy with contents of my library and don't want to re-rip it all to something else and lastly also have video I'd like to stream to my Apple TV.

ok I'll let you do that then :), could you not just use a good NAS box, that's what I had prior to Google Music days.

Oh I see. I did google it but lots came up with people hosting their iTunes directory on a file server and calling it an iTunes server.

So can iTunes act as a server now? Is this for Airport express?

iTunes can act as a server - you can stream to any iDevice, to computers running itunes, to Apple TV/Airport Express or to anything that's AirPlay compatible. However, doing so at the mo so we can watch endless episodes of Peppa/Sarah & Duck currently involves leaving my laptop plugged into the router by Ethernet; would like to be able to stream from something else...
