Morning STW mind.
I've recently taken up carpets in my lounge and sanded the floor back. The downside is that the room is now pretty chilly, noticeable draft coming up from the floor. I have a cellar beneath with exposed joists. Is there any reason I cannot glue polystyrene panels in between the joists direct onto the wooden floor boards?
I've looked at the likes of Kingspan panels but these polystyrene boards seem lots cheaper. I've also thought about loose fibre glass insulation with netting holding it in place but the cellar is used lots and frankly I hate dealing with that itchy stuff.
Any ideas collective?
you could do the fibreglass nettign thing and then plasterboard the cellar ceiling so it's sealed in.
depending on cellar height you could just fix 8x4 celotex panels to the underside of the joists - it would be quicker and if the edges were sealed well avoid draughts.
proper job would be insulate between joists then plasterboard though and make sure everythign's well sealed.
Polystyrene is not as good as insulating at Kingspan, which is why it's cheaper. You could also use standard roof insulation between the joists which is then help up by garden netting stapled underneath.
Have a look on the navitron forum for loads of information.
Obviously this won't be as effective as proper insulation but it does work well and is fairly cheap and easy to do.

There's always a pedant, isn't there? You knew exactly what I meant 😉
