Just had a video chat with my wife's nan. Mrs C is down meeting family and her nan for some reason has a soft spot for me and has not seen me in real life for a while.Â
She's 98 and has lived alone for 40 years since her husband died. She was a tractor mechanic in the land army in WW2 and still did the spannering on her old metro until she gave it up about 10 years ago. We gave her a track day experience for her 90th and she blew away the young touring car driver she was assigned to who could not frighten her no matter how hard he pushed. She's reliant on a lift to the shops now she doesn't drive but insists on doing her own shopping, cooking and cleaning and lives in an immaculate little house (with an upstairs bedroom) in a normal residential area, not sheltered accommodation. Has an exercise bike in the living room she watches daytime TV on. This is after a life of zero privilege working as a cleaner.Â
Asked me what I'm driving now and really fancies having a crack at driving a leccy car but wouldn't fancy a Telsa because of 'that tosser' Musk. Sharp as a tack.
After years of not being too bothered about living another year as all her friends are long dead she's now decided at 98 she might as well crack on and try and reach 100.
Quite the inspiration. I'm not sure I'd want it but a good demonstration that the finish straight is a very different experience for us all.

Statistics......I'd love to find out how many people 98 and older are still living completely independently. Anyone know how you find that stat? I'm sure she'd love to know....now she's set on pushing on to 3 figures.Â
My auntie is "only" 93 a 5ft nothing force of nature 💪 Still lives in her massive farmhouse she had built 30 odd years ago after her divorce. She's got 2 ride on mowers , grows her own veg , chops her own logs , in fact last year she managed to get her axe stuck in a big one . I tried to get it out no luck . A few days later I asked her if her son had managed to get it out , he lives in his dad's farmhouse, she said " No good waiting for him I just kept banging it on the ground until it came out" ! Always says to me if they tell me I have to go in a home I shall go down to the river and drown myself 💪
