We are off to Plockton on Friday. What’s the forum advise on Mozzi repellent? Don’t really want to douse the kids in DEET if I can help it.
I use Life Systems products for full on protection for mossies but an Avon product called Skin so Soft for non-health issue insects. It seems to work really well but you do smell like your grandmas handbag when wearing it
Smidge seems to work on most insects for me. Doesn't melt stuff and smells reasonable
Smidge
Smidge
Cheers, a bit of Smidge and some Avon ordered.
Skin so Soft is NOT a repellent. It only works if you apply a thick enough layer of it so that the midge drown in it once they land on you. I've used it (pre-Smidge) and on a bad day you'll be scraping a layer of oily midge off you every couple of hours.
If @scotroutes is correct then I would scratch my recommendation, that sounds minging
Mosi-guard hands down the best we’ve used.
We have mosquitoes 10 months of the year in the sub tropics and this stuff works really well against mossies, ticks and sand flies. Oddly it’s a UK brand made with eucalyptus, but we found it in Australia.
The roll on lasts for hours.
Smidge and most others use picardin it's just as synthetic as deet.
I'm happy to see any evidence of deet being an issue but I'm pretty sure various studies have concluded it isn't.
Lemon eucalyptus oil works better than both by all accounts as does Victoria's secret.
Smidge. Its a game changer.
Bite Back “Flies Undone” is awesome. Doesn’t eat your synthetic clothes like DEET-based stuff does

I'm a big fan of Autan. It works well at repelling clegs/horseflies, they seem to be my airborne nemesis...

same with marmite.
Smidge and the Smokin Midge worked well for us recently up north.
Smidge. Without it I’m like sacrificial protection for those around me. Wouldn’t use anything else
Maybe that’s the answer, have some placebo ‘repelent’ for the wife and kids?
dangerourbrain - I didn't know that. Picardin seems better than DEET in most regards but it isn't brilliant.

Seems like all the recommendations contain that as an active ingredient.
Having been to many places where the bugs aren't just annoying but carry diseases, I'd say where ever possible cover up. Long sleeve Tees and Trousers.
Smidge has worked well with us for years . Without it I get bitten a lot. The good thing about it is that it doesn’t rot your clothing like Deet.
Smidge.

I wouldn't suggest it's necessarily a health concern but as a spectacle wearer I'm more bothered about accidentally getting any on lenses. I prefer Picaridin as an active ingredient so I use Autan, Smidge or Flies Undone which I've found at least as effective as high strength DEET.
I was up in Plockton in June, I stopped indoors mostly. Mostly because Scottish weather, but smidge seemed to work, and I'm a bitey-bastard magnet. Stopped using DEET years ago after the bottle leaked in the camping box and 'melted' the plastic handle of the chef's knife.
