Morning all,

Thirteen bites the day after cooking outside of the cabin I was staying in on my last night in Wales suggests that my aged can of Jungle formula is no longer as effective as it should be.  To be fair it was the last of 5 I bought in a closing down sale at £2 each quite a number of years ago now so its probably not very surprising....

So before going out and buying more Jungle Defence, is there anything better these days?

As I understand, DEET is no longer allowed and Avon SSS isn't what it used to be so available options only please and thank you.

I have a small lightbulb shaped bug zapper which seems quite handy in my little tent so something a little larger while still battery powered (USB C please) would be useful too if anyone can recommend anything?.

What No more Deet? I still have 2 bottles of 95%,but the 10%i got from Thailand is my favourite.

I just bought  half litre of 10% permethrin (permapel?) cos the midges get through my midge net. The stuff in the shops is 0.5%

Smidge - its a game changer.  Actually works like DEET without the toxicity of DEET

Smidge kept the bitey little bastids off me in Wales a couple of weeks back.

Smidge and apparently they have a different version called moskito as well.

Deet is evil.

To ease the bites one of those little heating devices by beurer are really good

Anything with >20% Picaridin/Saltidin will do the job. I've not seen anything convincing saying DEET is harmful to health but it's not good for plastics and that's more a worry for me.

Smidge works well but it's a bit pricey, I've had equally good results with Flies Undone which I found a lot more affordable.

May I be the first to recommend a smouldering Benson and Hedges stuck on a pin? A blob of blu tack and you can take it anywhere

Or, as your username suggests, a pinch of Mary J in the mix to keep the mood relaxed

This https://bitebackproducts.co.uk/products/biteback-superfly%E2%84%A2-ultimate-insect-repellent-spray?variant=42528016302295 has the same level of Icaridin as Smidge, and smells like lavender. Excellent against ticks, and mosquitos

it's also - roughly - 25% of the price of Smidge.

true, but the request was for protection against insects/mosquitoes in deepest darkest Wales.

True, it's one active ingredient plus some botanicals that smell like they'd maybe repel insects but have only dubious proven efficacy. According to Smidge they make you taste bad.

I think the Superfly stuff petec's recommending is the new branding for Flies Undone.

A bottle small enough for air travel would be a plus.

+1 for smidge, it's not as effective vs other bugs as jungle formula but it's still effective overall ime.

Has anyone had any luck with this new breed of electric repellers? They're mostly mosquito chasers, I've seen only very mixed reviews for UK bugs

At £130 for 5L, it's reasonably priced enough to spray around the whole camping area with a cordless pressure washer.

Life systems stuff is also good and not quite as dear as Smidge. Plenty to choose from with and without deet.
