Getting too cold and too old for cycling all winter. I've got all the kit but when it's cold but not snowy I just don't enjoy it. I'll still go out coz I'd go mad if not...coz of the kids I usually only get the time once they're in bed...colder in the dark so it just seems like pure slog rather than fun.

What would be a good indoor sport to take up over winter. I was always shit at team sports at school and I'd be worried if I joined like a football hobby team I'd just be rubbish and ruin their league. What do you lot enjoy indoors?

Karate for me - took it up a few years back when my son had progressed into the kids intermediate / adult beginners group.

Best thing I’ve ever done and should have done it many years ago !

Ten pin bowling or dominoes. The sports of kings. On a more serious note, indoor climbing and bouldering are great fun.

I was about to say that, I've got a new board to go up at the weekend.

+1 for climbing.  There's a number of climberists on STW who can advise on how to get started.

Hehe yeah it would have to involve some element of cardio and ideally not in a pub, however enjoyable that would be 🍺🤩

Swimming and also indoor rowing on the Concept 2 rower (use the online logbook and rankings to make it a bit competitive).

Spin class, did this all last winter and had a noticeable effect come the summer. Also HIIT and weights.

You didn't specify warm so I'll throw out curling. Very social, good for balance and core stability, can be surprisingly hard work and there's usually a beer in it afterwards. Depends on where you live though. I joined a team for a league when I had zero experience and within a few weeks I wasn't the worst!

I love squash, really good competitive workout that is also social. Unfortunately not any decent courts near me.

HIIT isn't a sport/activity, it is a training methodology.

Archery is fun, though if you're doing it indoors you're doing it wrong.

Thanks, we have Heians rather than Pinans. For Blue I have to do Godan, Heian Yondan is the purple belt kata for Shito-Ryu. That’s the next one for me , and then it’s brown.

Ah. I'm Shūkōkai, an offshoot of Shito-Ryu.

Jurokuno and Matzukaze, plus all of the Pinans for my next grading. Had a complete memory wipe at training last night. I think I've over cooked it!

Archery. And if you're doing it indoors you're warm and not losing your arrows in a nettle patch.

Pilates Monday evenings.

Touch rugby Thursday evenings.

Archery Tuesdays

Pub the rest.

But again, HIIT isn't a "something" it is a way of doing something. You can do HIIT on a bike, on a treadmill, with kettlebell, plyometrics ect. ect. It is a meaningful as saying "zone 2" or "long and slow",  you have to match it to an actual activity.

DiRT Rally (1) on PS4.  Good headphones essential.  Currently £8.99 download I think, be quick.

Ye gods, it's good..   So where's the actual fitness element?

I kid you not - every time I want a fag break I remember I quit smoking last month.  So I dug out some Megapex swivelling push-up bars.  Now when I want a break I simply pause Dirt Rally, head to the workshop, celebrate not smoking, drop and give 20.  Can confirm it also appears to develop this exact hairline:.

Ah, forgot.  Swimming.  I try and visit the pool three or four nights a week.  Try and find a basic lane swimming pool for laps, without all of the splashing around family stuff.  Feels great dried off and heading out into the cold night air, cycling home for a hot chocolate and/or tipple.

Turbo training. Zwift is a game changer for keeping it interesting.

Swimming. I'm a terrible swimmer so do this rarely, but know that in theory it's very good.

Running. Not necessarily indoors, running in grim weather is a lot more pleasant that cycling. If you must, use a treadmill, but 5 or 10k in the cold and rain is quite pleasant once you're warmed up.

Might sound daft/crazy but stick with it. How about unicycle hockey? Its great for the core. Good for balance and coordination. It is a team sport but mostly played by people who aren't into team sports an never got on with sport at school. I find team activities are better for motivation than swimming, gym, etc. Tricky bit may be finding a team. There are sessions in Cardiff, Bristol, London, Horsham, Southampton, East Midlands and probably a few others. More here, not up to date but its a start  https://www.unicycle.org.uk/clubs/

Fortunately nettles die down over the winter.

Last time I did indoor archery I lost the arrow in the ventilation unit on the ceiling.

If you do darts, be sure to wear a peg on yer nose. 😉

Only thirty minutes into this new sport and already wrecked a Mini Cooper and an Escort.  Came 7th in the Escort in Greece on 2nd try so uploaded the victory roll for STW viewing pleasure.  I was surprised.  Didn't record the 21 extra-fast and sweaty victory laps on the push up bars.   That would be weird.
