So anyone else been to see this?
Went last night, thought it was way better than Crystal Skull (but that's not difficult lol) and not totally over the top.
Some good nods to previous films.
Harrison isn't doing too bad for an old guy either lol.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge & Mads Mickelson were good in their roles too.
Hopefully it's a series that won't get a reboot - as no one else could play Indy!
Going to see it next week, reviews are all positives and Empire's given it 4 stars. No spoilers but I wonder if they kill him off at the end!? 😂
I'm hoping to see it this weekend...has to be better than Crystal Skull, but I'm worried it isn't and it'll be utter bobbins. It isn't high brow intellectual stuff at the best of times but it should be a believable romp.
The problem is that everyone invested in the Indiana Jones story can remember The Last Crusade, which I maintain is not just the best Indiana Jones movie but one of the finest examples of the action-adventure Hollywood blockbuster ever made. With such a high bar to aim for it's almost inevitable that Dial of Destiny is going to be a let-down in some way, although hopefully a very enjoyable one nonetheless.
I will be watching the shit out of it on the biggest cinema screen I can find once I'm back on home soil.
Just back from seeing it. Not a disaster and cleverly done in parts. My son considered it a worthy addition and had fun which is a 👍 from me.
This popped up on my suggested articles this morning for those who are interested
Just back...enjoyed it, far better than the last one.
Really quite enjoyed it. I was worried after some poor reviews, but it was a larf. Did anyone else think of the blues brothers near the end?
Not an inspiring title is it. Temple of Doom, last crusade, dial of destiny (reminds me of phoning a girl for the first time on an old rotary phone)
Took the boys last night, theyre 9 & 11 and they absolutely loved it. Which is really the measure of success for an Indiana Jones movie, innit.
Not heard a real world review from anyone who hasn't enjoyed it, so it's on my watch list, on the basis that I'm not expecting Oscar winning standards from an Indiana Jones movie.
I've been ignoring it since Skull was utter pish, might give it a look if I'm bored.
Far better that Crystal Skull...worth seeing it.
Looking forward to this now, proper old school block buster in the cinema.
All the reviews I've read/seen said it was typical Disney formulaic drivel. But I don't go to the cinema anymore so I'm not invested in any of this.
I watched it last night and enjoyed it. It’s absolutely ridiculous and thoroughly entertaining. PWB was good and HF is amazing for 80.

I thought it was great and my 12 year thought It was amazing. I thought they were kids films that “grownups” enjoyed😃
It’s absolutely ridiculous and thoroughly entertaining.
Agreed. I took my 19 year old and 12 year old daughters and they enjoyed. It's the best IJ other than the first two.
As others have said, the bar was set so high with the originals plus the nostalgia factor for many of us growing up with these movies that regardless of how good this new one is, its always going to be second best.
that’s the weird thing though - it wasn’t! They’re OK movies, but all are flawed. The enduring popularity is solely down to the character (& HF’s iconic portrayal of) and the theme music which IMO has transcended the actual films. I’m always amazed that whoever owns it has done so little with the franchise over the years beyond a handful of low-key computer games and the odd Lego-tie in.As others have said, the bar was set so high with the originals

Don't forget a dire tv series.
I'm glad they haven't done anything else...now Disney has Lucas films I'm guessing we'll see several dozen spin-offs of each character.
I'm really hoping they don't do anything with it.

Is it a case of them having extremely memorable parts eg the boulder chasing him but the whole film(s) not actually being particularly great? I was thinking this while watching the end of The Spy Who Loved Me yesterday, waiting for the news. The last 20 minutes were abysmal, but it's remembered for Roger Moore's final line. (Keeping the British end up, sir.) See also, Carry On films, etc.
If I were being especially harsh I'd say it was literally just that one scene out of the entire trilogy that is especially memorable! (but in fairness it's got to be one of the most iconic in the history of cinema 🤷♂️)Is it a case of them having extremely memorable parts eg the boulder chasing him but the whole film(s) not actually being particularly great?
I'll just leave this here......
regardless of the above - Raiders is still an iconic film!!!
My dad took me (14) and my 12 year old sister to see the original film. I distinctly remember being a morose surly teenager thinking he was too cool to be going to the ABC with his dad - and ****IN' LOVING IT! My now 81 year old father is coming up to stay at my sister's in a fortnight, and we're thinking of taking him to see the Dial of Destiny....

I don't think you're being harsh at all - that's why I only gave one example. 😀
He's an iconic looking character though, and if, lets say, Homer Simpson was to reach under a closing cave door for a fedora then you'd know exactly who was being referenced.

And on reading that, all I can hear in my head is the theme tune 🙂

Simpsons or Indiana Jones?
What about that bit where the Nazis face melted off, always memorable for me!
The second one is a very boring and mediocre film imo. Vaguely racist caricatures and a woman that spends the whole film screaming. Great arcade game though. Raiders and Last Crusade are great. I’ll wait for streaming for this one.
Went to see it last night with the wife and kids and we all enjoyed it. I absolutely love Indiana Jones, the first two movies are amongst my favourites (I’m still pretending Crystal Skull didn’t happen) and I thought this did them justice.

I'll bite:
Rolling boulder
Grabbing hat under closing wall
Delicately replacing the golden idol with a sandbag
The Ark being stored away in a warehouse
The minetrain chase
Petra
The guy who challenges to a fistfight and is nonchalantly shot
Cutting the rope bridge
Chilled monkey brains
I expect these have all been referenced by family guy at least.
It’s the best IJ other than the first two.
I absolutely love Indiana Jones, the first two movies are amongst my favourites (I’m still pretending Crystal Skull didn’t happen)
I'd this what you actually mean or are you forgetting Temple of Doom? I mean, it was never the popular choice...
Eyeball soup
Indy was the dog's name
Rock in tank gun
Jehovah begins with a 'I'
Currently watching Last Crusade on Film 4, it's a perfect action movie.
Boat Chase!
Motorbike jousting!
Aeroplane chase!
Sean Connery!
"I'm sorry son, they got us"
"Goose stepping morons like you should try reading books instead of burning them"
It isn’t high brow intellectual stuff at the best of times but it should be a believable romp.
Can we unpack this please?
You don't think the lost chalice and ghosts of the Knights Templar are real do you?!
Hahaha, I've no idea what the word I was meaning to use but romp is correct but believable isn't...maybe I was meaning entertaining romp!
I can't even blame autocorrect for that complete disconnect from brain to fingers! Sorry.

Yes, it needs to follow some sort of logic, so once the Ark was opened unleashing hideous floaty angel-things, then all sorts of magic and mystery are allowed.
But, saving people from quicksand by using a handily placed and compliant boa constrictor isn't allowed because that is just stupid on a level not seen since my kids watched Dora the Explorer. 😀
That's got a brilliant start sequence, in the night club. Whenever I hear 'Anything Goes' it makes me think of that scene. I tend to get a little bored later in the film, although it has got other good sections.I’d this what you actually mean or are you forgetting Temple of Doom?

Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom are amongst my favourite films. Last Crusade was good but not up there with the first two IMO. Crystal Skull didn't happen.
I don't get the hate for Crystal Skull. Excellent film.

I'm partially with you there – it was good enough and I'd watch it if I was flicking through the channels late at night, but I'm not sure I'd label it as 'excellent'.

I'll allow it, I think honest fits nicely
Crystal Skull was doing well with the formula until the last 45 minutes then it went fully down the toilet of utter bobbins. Would have been decent if it wasn't alien mince. If it is ever on, I'll watch the first bits but tend to switch off once they get to the temple and enter it.
Opening sequence of Crystal Skull was brilliant (nuke test site & fridge) pity it went down hill after the first half of the film.

It was half decent at the beginning, then got really shit, really quickly. The terrible special effects don't help either.
Like a couple of the Bond films that blew all their budget on real life stunts and fancy cars then had nothing left to pay the CGI department so ended up with Brosnan holding a kite in front of a green screen...
so ended up with Brosnan holding a kite in front of a green screen…
WHAT. ARE. YOU. TELLING. ME???
Raiders and Last Crusade are great popcorn films - it's storytelling, it's stupid, but it's done well
Temple of Doom is a bit dull.
Crystal Skull was really not great.
I'll watch this one, but probs wait for it on streaming.
And let's not forget, for all it's flaws and criticism about "really, another one?" Raiders is/was a much better film than Star Wars, but that doesn't stop seemingly every 40-50 something year old man child jizzing their pants whenever another half-baked nonsense is churned out of that particular franchise sausage factory.
Opening sequence of Crystal Skull was brilliant (nuke test site & fridge)
Urgh.
See that bit about being believable? I get that there's a bit of a joke going on there but it's just beyond daft.

Who, exactly, goes to see action adventure films expecting believability? The whole sodding point is the suspension of disbelief!
You’re supposed to be sitting there wallowing in the spectacle, not nitpicking every little bit that doesn’t follow exactly the laws of physics, nature or whatever.
Really… 🙄🤷🏼

“Gooshe shtepping morons like you should try reading books inshtead of burning them”
For the FULL Sean Connery effect.
Temple of Doom is a bit dull.
And just a wee bit y'know; racist 😬
They're all pretty good films.
I'll take any one of them over a thousand other films that get repeated and repeated ad infinitum.
In order of awesomness;
- The Last Crusade
- Raiders of the Lost Ark
- Temple of Doom
- Crystal Skull (which I watched last night on Film4)
Saw it this evening and was disappointed at the lack of call-centre action!

You left out 'She talksh in her shleep!'.
Just back.
Enjoyed it, on the whole. Thought they dealt with the ageing thing very well, quite a melancholy thread running through the whole thing.
The opening sequence was the best bit for me, along with PWB - she pretty much stole the whole thing.
I'm 54 and was pretty much the youngest person there, maybe younger people just aren’t that invested in Indy like they are in Star Wars? Even ROTLA was harking back to a cinematic golden age we only knew from old pictures on the telly......
Quite enjoyed it. Pace was slower than the early films, but the guy is 80 so he isn’t going to be dragging himself behind a truck with his whip. Agree with the “melancholic” statement made earlier.
I thought he’d use the time machine to go back to 1936 and live out his days in the desert, but it was good to see Marion again.
The least believable bit for me and my daughter was how could PWB be related to Toby Jones. As my daughter said… “How tall must her mother have been?!”
Family opinion was that it was the third best behind Raiders and Crusade.
You left out ‘She talksh in her shleep!’.
That’s a great line that does get overlooked somewhat! I’m probably going to see the latest one this week, I keep seeing articles claiming it’s a huge flop, yada yada yada, but the time to call it a flop is if it’s lost money six months later after international releases.
’Course, the meeja has to make money from clicks… 🙄
We watched it (finally) at the weekend – I quite enjoyed it. Lots of fun action sequences and a pretty tight storyline.
As my daughter said… “How tall must her mother have been?!”
They did make a reference to her height when they first met in the bar to make light of how tall she is.
Went to see it at the weekend. Shite, utterly brilliant entertaining shite with improbable plot, implausible nonsense stunts and some great nods back to the originals. Mrs Scape and I remember going to see Raiders as students when it first came out so this was a must for us. Worth every penny of the ticket price!
