I think you’ll find it can be very easily beaten by simply using some proper cheese and throwing the pesto in a pond, where it belongs.

Well that pond comment just cost me some red wine I'm now mopping from my jumper 🤣 chapeau @binners

Although, I must disagree with Warburtons. Buy an unsliced white loaf, slice thickly, and fill yer boots... Or your toastie if you will 😜

mmm might try some of these.
Children have been off self isolating, and their favourite so far is;
Using a wrap, tuna mayo, loads of grated cheese. Drop of Worcestershire sauce, chopped onions.

Flat plate panini press, ribbed is not always pleasure. Easy to clean. Can use normal bread or rolls or whatever.

Most lunches it classic cheese and marmite. Sweat treat, nuttela and bnanna.

Whisked egg and grated cheese if using one of those horrible edge crimping units, or egg and beans.

Cheese ham and chutney is a favourite in the flat Panini thing.

Ham, German salami, stilton, french mustard, on multigrain was a tasty treat earlier in the week.

I could imagine some left over chorizo and bean chilli with some pungent cheese and jalapenos in one would be good too if only we ever had any leftovers...

This thread has cheered me up on a rather grim day

Surely the burning question tho is "where do we stand on the croque monsieur / croque madame?"

Today's effort consisted of ham, mozzarella, watercress and English mustard. Tomato & chilli relish on the side. Mmmmm. Trying to decide what tomorrows will be after a morning pedal.

I fry mine in a normal frying pan. Can't be bothered with another gizmo in the kitchen and you can do a good job with external cheese (Jamie Oliver grilled cheese style).

Today's my birthday, and without any prompting or mention of this thread,a brand new grill/toastie machine (Tefal) landed this morning.

My family must be telepathic.

I am so excited . 🙂

I'm old enough to remember when a new toastie machine in the house meant agonizing minutes spent trying to find a plug and then attempting to attach it to the cable.

TJ that toasting device is genius! Us proles only had toasting forks, admittedly we had an extendable one which was somewhat 'upmarket'

For a low brow quick lunch I like Red Leicster (cheeper seems to melt better) and sliced peperami on white.

This is getting my taste buds going. I have never owned a tostie maker and just bung it under the grill. From the conversation, this seems inferior...

@Nobeerinthefridge

You could try vegan cheese, the stuff my local vegan cafe does is pretty good melted, not sure what it is though. It’s basically a nice melty, salty edge to the satay type other flavours. Grand.

Have been trying allsorts of late and my favourite has been the Veganzola that Mrs P was sent for xmas. I got a small taste test and it was top notch. A bit of a surprise tbh - like a very silky, creamy feta combined with a delicious blue gorgonzola.

Have only found one Cheddar/smoky one so far that I like and that’s the Applewood. Will also be giving this a watch:

Or the one I recommended up there somewhere, from Argos, Breville again, choice of flat plates, traditional triangular pockets and even a waffle making bit.

There’s going to be no garnishes going on, blueberry or otherwise

I think tomorrow’s lunch is going to be a mature cheddar, corned beef and onion toastie with Heinz tomato soup to dunk it in 😃

Finally made a nearly plant-based* Reuben toastie in the frying pan last week. The Gods smiled on us as I found some seitan (pastrami style) on offer, along with some vegan cheese. Had some pickles on the shelf and some sourdough in the freezer. Some vega mayo and mustard too. All the stars had aligned. It was ... ace. Really nice. Surprised me, as didn’t think I liked seitan.

Buttered the outer slices and whacked in a hot pan on low heat, flipped until golden outside and inners going gooey.

*I may also have nicked a bit of our dog’s (dairy) cheese that we use to hide his tablets in 😎

Gah, now want another and it’s fast-day

Filth delivered. Fast will wait.

tonight I made them with this for the first time:

Tastes like a very Cheddary, very processed, melted cheese. Perfect for burgers. Even the dog liked it. He sucked it off my fingers. Which was weird.

Had the most awesome toasted sandwich yesterday

Sourdough buttered
Home made salt beef
Sauerkraut
Cheese
Dijon mustard
Tabasco
Black pepper

Not strictly a toastie as just one piece of bread (like an open sandwich) then grilled

I bought a Breville non-stick flat plate toastie maker for Christmas, it's ace as you don't need butter to stop it sticking.

Best two toasties so far:

Tuna mayo and tomato
Haggis and edam cheese

In related news ( (and it may have been mentioned earlier) I've just had a 4 way wrap- chicken, hallouni, tomato and bbq sauce - pretty damned good - if wasnt trying to shift timber I would have used meltable cheese and possibly bacon.
In case you aren't down with the kids you basically cut a wrap from the centre out and put a filling in a quarter by the cut then fold that quarter over add another filling and fold again until you have a layered triangle- few minutes in a frying pan with fry light to crisp up and get stuck in

I've seen the videos for these and wasnt sure if it was fad or real, will have to try now!

Not a toastie but today I cut a bagel in half, grilled the bottom, on the cut edge smeared BBQ sauce, chucked some grated cheese on it and pepperoni then put back under the grill to melt the cheese and it was bloody lovely!

I reckon this would work quite well in a toasted sandwich (or anything with cheese really).

Beer, Bacon & Chilli Jam

Bought some at Christmas and it basically lasted two days. Soooo nice

We've been thinking about getting a toastie maker for a while, but I'm scared if I made it that easy, I might eat nothing else.

We've been "surviving" with a griddle pan, baking parchment, and a cast iron pan on top.

We went on holiday in september and one place we stayed in had a breville toastie maker.

It reminded me that they don't work very well. You end up with a semi-sealed (crimped shut) bread compartment with its contents generating vapour and any trapped air (in the bread, between the fillings) expanding as it heats. As the cheese melts, it drops, and the air rises, and as the air expands further, the pressure forces the melted cheese out of the seams, leaving you with a very cheesy worktop and a less cheesy bag of air and ham.

So if you're shopping, say no to that sort, get a Foreman grill type thing or a panini press.

Want something even simpler?

Toast bread in a regular toaster.
Add filling.
30 seconds on high in the microwave.

Proper Job!

No pockets.Virtually no cleaning up...no faff.

@p7eaven (or anyone else) can you recommend a non-dairy cheese for a fussy 8 year old for toasties? He used to like cheddar but has not been impressed by the vegan cheeses we've tried. I guess something pretty plain and just a bit salty and tangy would be best.

@sl2000

Supermarkety options I’d probably say Sheese Cheddar. With fussy disclaimers. I’m not a big fan of vegan cheese in general.

https://www.buteisland.com/products/sheese-blocks/mature-cheddar-style/

Careful, hot when melted. Hotter than the sun!

Oakwood Smoked vegan cheese is pretty nice, but smokey.

There are a few grated mozzarella options, think Waitrose do one. Have fun!

Corned beef toasties are so delicious. I'm a fussy git so just have that alone.
Butter the outside, leave it far too long so the toast is crunchy (not burnt) and a perfect meal.

Never had a problem cleaning, with cheese or beans or anything.

Secret is to heat it up and use a cold wet dishcloth to get all the now loose bits off.
Careful though as they get damn hot and the cloth warms up instantly.

Prompted by the thread, kind of, I've just ordered more Devils Mortar (British N'duja sausage, lush in a toastie with Mozzarella) and some nice ham. Anyone have any recommendations for some face punchingly strong mustard?

10 months later and i'm still making Peanut butter, sriracha and cheese toasties. It's evolved a little though to include spring onions and streaky bacon. Perfect mix now of sweet, spicy, salty.

As far as the breville vs panini press argument goes....well i'm using a sandwich iron and its doing a bloody good job!

Hey hey, it's this again! And in time for Toastie Season.

Cheese and pickle toasties are good, I've discovered
And cheese and haggis
And cheese and pizza sauce

And manchego is my new toastie cheese of choice

Another one i've made recently was pepperoni, mozzarella, red onion chutney, tomato and basil. I did contemplate using pizza dough instead of bread but stuck to proper white sliced in the end.

Ooh, missed this first time around. Are we allowed to use an electric sandwich toaster? Or does it have to be a real-flame shiny-steel hand-held poncy artisan affair? Asking for a friend.

It is indeed toastie season. I had my favourite on getting in from the pub the other night… corned beef, onion, Worcester sauce but replaced the usual mature cheddar with this beauty from Aldi…

Red Fox, red Leicester. It’s lush and makes perfect toasties!

I’m definitely giving manchego a go though
