Off for a weeks holiday in Coniston next week....perfectly timed for the end of all the good weather and a week of rain!

Will be with wife and dog so whilst will try and get a couple of bike rides in more likely to be hiking.

Welcome any recommendations for things to do there as know you're all a knowledgable lot.

Bike ride/hike tips but also things like pubs, restaurants, things to do (when it's wet? I will be taking waterproofs!)

Next Saturday night is ulverston lantern procession. Get some mushrooms and freak out.

Classic hike is old man, to black sail to wetherlam and back via coppermines valley.

Boozers -black bull and crown ok but blacksmiths at broughton mills and Wilson's at torver better.

Grizedale and hawkshead for low level walks, west side of windermere/wray castle too.

Old man of coniston up via Goats water down the popular route on the front.

Bluebird cafe by the lake for great views. Lots of  boat rental options there too.

Lots of potential for exploring the quarries round Hodge Close including a through tunnel at Cathedral cavern

Brantwood for Ruskin stuff but travel by boat

I think Bluebird is now in a museum there

Wilson Arms in Torver

The Jumble Rooms in Grasmere if feeling flush.

Some nice coast nearby - Humphrey Head - if weather in the hills is manky

Pint of Bluebird in the Black Bull.

If poor weather some nice walks round torver common, cumbria way is a good start.

Mountain rescue site lists problem areas for callouts around coniston, worth a quick reccie as I ve nearly been caught out and I ve walked round there loads of times.

Tarn Hows.  National Trust car park at the top.  In the summer was a little cafe / van setup that did lovely pasties and cake.  We pedalled up (and it was UP but an absolute blast going back down) from Ulverston and met my wife who had driven up with the dog.

Quarries by Little Langdale.  We found the route in a book but could share a gpx if helpful.

Pretty cool but do not be tempted to step in the big puddle in the chamber pictured below it's a huge steeply sided hole full of water.  Dog on lead.

Good suggestions above. Riding over to the pub in Little Langdale is an option (and incorporates Hodge Close) and can be extended over to Elterwater via a fun descent down Sawrey’s Woods/Yew Crag. From Hawkshead the route to Hodge Close via Iron Keld is also good. If it’s very wet, the cinema in Ambleside is an option. Grisedale isn’t far away too.

Church Beck is an absurdly excellent Gyll scramble.

( Although not so much in spate conditions!)

Pedal along to Wilson's for dinner can be done on paths. Nice pint of bluebird and gammon that demands bigger plates.

If you use the disused railway to Torver, you also pass The Ship which does robust pub food - good portions, probably frozen veg but homemade mains and decent value (for the Lakes).
