In scotland "Sausage roll in a roll" or "Pie (Peh) in a roll" is a thing, a wonderful thing.

A hot sausage roll in a buttered crispy morning roll (soft or wellfired to suit preference, never any of that claggy cob, barm, bap shite you get south of the border" is a belter.

We also have a noble tradition of putting things in pies so its perfectly possibly for instance to have "A lasagne pie in a roll" or "MAcaroni pie in a roll"

Where am i going with this you say? well, yesterday whilst eating my dinner I struck upon a brainwave.

Chicken Kiev in a roll. If i had a roll that would have been happening alas no such bread produce was available.

So i promise to you that i will try this and report back, but what else could go in a roll?

Roast dinner in a yorky in a roll? I think that would have t be called "the enigma"

What you got?

I got a nasty burn cutting into a chicken Kiev yesterday. It ejaculated over my arm. Had it been it a roll, the injury could have been facial!

Head to Wigan. Everything in a barm!

Do love a lasagne pie. The butchers here does a breakfast pie,

Lorne, bacon, haggis and egg in a scotch pie case.

that thought had occured to me... the only solution i can come up with is nibble a small hole to relive the pressure then dribble the nectar straight into your mouth, finish by consuming the earthly remains

I have an aversion to 'carb in carb' things like a chip butty, or hash browns in burgers.

Pie in a roll firmly falls into that category. Macaroni pie in a roll?? New category necessary! Carb in carb in carb!

As a Scot you know fine and well that's an utterly daft question.

EVERYTHING goes in a roll!

Supermarket single serving quiches fit very happily in a Morton's roll

New category necessary!

There used to be a Glasgow film/tv caterers that did 'Sandwich Pakoras' which I expected to be a sandwich with a pakota in it, but was actually a pakora with a sandwich inside. Quite nice in a roll.

Ok, so being a fan of the occasional Pie on a roll, I could get onboard with this. I once had an interesting conversation with an Aberdonian about these wholesome snacks as a hangover cure. He laughed in the face of my pie/roll & suggested I try a pie between two Aberdeen Butteries (Rowies) The Butteries of course need to be heated and spread with butter before enclosing the warm pie. Any takers?

Kiev in a roll should be buttered with the contents of the Kiev before consuming, thus avoiding an unfortunate hot facial.

When at uni, which is you the time of your life when any food goes, I once bought a medium white loaf, cut the end off, hollowed it out and put inside it:
2 garlic chicken kievs
A can of (stewed) beans
Boiled leek
Fried onion
Mashed potatoes
Butter

And ate it like a large sandwich.
Only did it the once, but it was very nice. Garlic kievs and beans ftw, still a "thing" these days.

As above for the Kiev, which actually sounds bloody awesome!

As a kid I used to have fundus pancake sarnies (roof of mouth burners) and also those little frozen pizzas (cooked!) In a sarnie

A Holland’s cheese and onion pie is the perfect size and shape to fit snuggly into a Sheldons oven bottom

It’s like they were designed specifically to go together.

A match made in heaven…

Chicken Kiev in a roll. If i had a roll that would have been happening alas no such bread produce was available.

It's an excellent meal. Just chop the kiev in half first to stop unexpected spurting. A slice of plastic cheese is a nice addition to a classic garlic butter kiev but not needed for some of the modern variations.

Scottish morning rolls are ideal brekkie bread especially if toasted or even better fried. For double carb action I like a bit ot tottie scone in there with the bacon and egg.

However no one Scottish can make any arguments about any kind of breakfast-based superiority because they're instantly negated by all the people saying 'roll on sausage'. Whit!?

‘roll on sausage’.

1) It's 'roll and sausage'

2) It's not a sausage roll, is it?

3) Most would actually ask for a 'roll and slice/square' or 'roll and links' since sausage is far too vague.

Scottish morning rolls are ideal brekkie bread especially if toasted or even better fried.

Who even does that?

A hash brown in a roll is like a breakfast chip butty, which can't be a bad thing.

Yorkshire pudding , lined with mash potato, layer of gravy, but more mash then your meat of choice on top. Make sure your roll is bigger in diameter than the yorkie though.

Chicago town mini pizza in a roll …mmmmm

Inspired kiev buttering solution.

the other day I had a deepfried bao bun desert which makes me think once the roll is crammed with extra oil salt and fat it should really be cast into the fryer

‘roll on sausage

@grum I just realised after my earlier post it's probably you not hearing the glottal stop - 'roll an[d] sausage'.

If it was 'roll on sausage' it would actually be pronounced 'roll oan [like own] sausage' which, to make matters worse, sounds much the same depending on the accent!

Probably the best breakfast sandwiches you'll get IMO!

I just realised after my earlier post it’s probably you not hearing the glottal stop – ‘roll an[d] sausage’.

I used to think it might be that but I've had arguments with Scottish people who swear 'it's just a roll on sausage and no it doesn't seem to make sense'.

Edit: seems to be a regional variation

Kievs should always be cooked on a slice of bread in the oven anyway..

Other half is Glaswegian and can confirm she has done the Kiev-in-a-roll thing many years ago. Along with pretty much every other possible savoury foodstuff. And ketchup.

See the way today's going, I can see me having a kiev in a roll for dinner and calling it a win. With beans, obviously.

Having recently moved sooth from Shetland I'm missing my sassermaet and onion rolls. Hoping a friend visiting before too long can bring me a stash down for the freezer!

Traditionally fry the sassermaet and then pour the rendered fat on the roll too. It's a rough chopped fatty cut of beef with secret/particular spice mixes in it. It's ace.

I couldn't face it. The thought of not doing it after talking about it all day was too much to bear.

nom

It promised so much.

And it delivered.

When I worked at Rolls Royce in East Kilbride you could ask for a Roll 'n Sausage at the canteen. Unless you specified in advance the serving girls would ask "slice or cock".

I used to enjoy a peh on a roll.
One day, when my daughter was just learning to talk. . .
My wife went into town and got me an M&S chicken and cream sauce pie,,
And some rolls, to be fair she did also warn me of the dangers . .
I don’t know what she used to heat the pie up, it may have been some sort of nuclear device,
But when i bit into it, i burnt my mouth, instantly (aaargghh)
So, I removed it, and kept it in my hand, whereupon it spilled out and burnt my hand (aaargghh)
So, I moved it to my other hand, whereupon it spilled out and burnt that one as well (f***in hell)
For about 3 weeks after it, whenever there was a lull in general conversation, my daughter would say “aah, (pause) aah, (pause) ‘kin ‘ell”
It cured me of eating pies on a roll, I haven’t had one since.

Unfortunately the juices had leaked during cooking but they were put straight onto the plate and used for mopping up. In future I'd probably burst the top then squeeze it out in a controlled way like you would with an egg.
