I have just ordered a new desktop PC as this one is creaking to do much more than browse porn and the new PC comes with graphics cars and stuff that makes it good for video editing (HP 4J9E5EA#ABU Desktop PC in Black)

While I know you are always amazed by the quality of my "Are you bored enough..." series I was wondering about learning a better video editor than MS Moviemaker.

What free/cheap software?
What training to go with it?
Any good YouTube channels to inspire me?

Lightworks or DaVinci Resolve

Both will require a bit of learning but once you get the idea they are great

I have an older version of Magix Move Edit Pro on my PC. You can find various versions for £40-£50. Does far more than I'd ever need, but is an easy interface to use.

Given that I think you’ve potentially a fair amount of time (?), why not look at the video editing bits of blender and pick up some of the 3d stuff at the same time?

bit late now but if specifically for video then one of the new Macs (laptop or Mac mini desktop) are incredible for video editing, doubt you'll get anything windows/intel based that'll do it as smoothly for the price!

Plus you can then run Lumafusion editing software which is v cheap & v intuitive, but also pretty powerful. EDIT: just googled & you can get it for Windows too, I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

Otherwise yes everyone raves about DaVinci but not tried it yet myself!

Don't like Mac plus I need compatibility with other machines, otherwise it would have been the obvious choice.

Don't have lots of time with full time work, artist stuff, cycling, life etc all competing so need to be able to pick stuff up quick. Fortunately I seem to learn software quite quick once I understand the concepts.

Lightworks is 720p max export on free which is fine ok YouTube but a real limit otherwise
Davinci seems good with training videos available. Reviews say the editing is not as good as it is focussed on colour correction but it probably does more than I need.
Lumafusion - Developed by Luma Touch LLC, LumaFusion is a video editor with a powerful collection of post-production tools. Unfortunately, it is not yet available for Android and Windows PC. Only iOS users can benefit from it for now.

Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve is my goto when I want to do something good. Supports multimonitor, 4k and has a lot more features that I will ever need.

Works well on my three year old Asus laptop

sorry, I did think that was the case, but then googled "Lumafusion windows" and there was a hit... looks like that was not legit though!!

We got into using DaVinci Resolve at work during lockdown and, after a bit of looking around, this became the preferred 'getting started' video.

Apologies, I thought this was a ‘pass the time while injured’ plan

Out of interest, what specs should one be aiming for when editing video? Is RAM more important than CPU? Or Graphics Card power etc?

I too have been messing around with video. I’m pretty sure I asked the same question as the OP a while back and every reply was a different software solution 🙃

So anyway, I’m learning the ropes on a combination of Da Vinci Resolve, Shotcut, and a dodgy copy of Premiere.

My i5 8gb Ram craptop is struggling though, especially with 4K.

I'm using Shotcut. I gives me a lot more than I need but once you get into it all seems pretty good.

Depends on what software you want to run.

NCH Videopad will run on the metaphorical toaster/potato it's that light.

DaVinci in the free version won't run on your graphics card. Obviously the output still is, but the heavy lifting of rendering etc is being done by the CPU.

Avid is the industry standard, but a licence costs more than a lot of people would think is sensible for a bike.

For the most part any mid range PC should be good enough these days. The need for threadripper processors, half a terabyte of RAM, banks of optane memory, and Quadro card(s) only really happens when there's a time pressure like several very expensive producers, directors and editors sat arround drumming their fingers waiting for it. In the real world as long as it runs smoothly and the hard drive is fast enough to let you scrub through footage in a non frustrating way then you can go make a cup of tea while it renders at the end.

DVR is great. And free!
I use it for a living
I pay full whack every month for premiere because the odd job requires it (eg you get a .prproj shared with you). I choose DVR over it almost every time
