Right so, I THINK I know the answer to this, but it's still slightly making my brain hurt.

Also, this isn't theory. This problem is real life and it's happening right now.

My other half and her mum are catching a flight to Spain tomorrow. They have to leave the house at about 2am, to get to East Midlands for 3am

Now, the mum wants 1 hour to get ready to leave at 2am. The other half wants half an hour.

The clocks go back one hour at 2am. The mum is using an analogue alarm clock, the other half a smartphone.

So I think the mums alarm is simple. I said she should set it for 1.58am. That way, she'll wake up and in two minutes the clocks will go back and it'll be 1am, giving her 1 hour to get ready before leaving.

The other half though is complicated by the fact that her smartphone (moto G5 for the record) may or may not auto update it's time.

So what time should she set her alarm in order to get half an hour to get ready before leaving at 2am?

Apologies if this is stupidly simple and we can't see the wood for the trees... 🤔😂

Get her mother to ring her when she's half ready 🙂

Why doesn’t mum wake up your other half up? It’s then Mum’s fault if it all goes wrong not yours.

Forget the alarm - find an oven timer, set it for 5hrs and start it running at 9:30pm.

The clocks don’t go back until 2am, so long as everyone has left by then, it won’t matter until they get home!
Watches, etc will need adjusting at the destination or on-route.

Just turn auto time off on the phone. Safest option imo as you can never be sure if it's changed or not.

Use the phones timer to set it to run for the right length to set off at the right time.

So if they want to wake up an hour before 2am, do they set the alarm at 2am? Because 2am, when it happens will be 1am....  😉

The flight is 3am so after they rollback set the alarm for 2am. oh wait needs to get ready, 1.30am it’ll then go back to 1am while she’s getting ready.

Is it a UK airline? At what time does the airline change their clocks?

can't they just put their clocks on GMT now? Then just go to bed and forget about it

Strewth that was hard work

and deducting 60mins @ 2am is not really in the realms of impossible maths to be fair.....

Some people can’t grasp how it works, usually those that work 9 to 5.

With those times there's no point going to bed. Problem solved.

I can't. Turned up to an xc race one year an hour late. Following year turned up smugly an hour early just in time to see them start without me.

Why do we still insist on putting clocks back / forward? Is there a genuinely good reason or is it just one of those ‘that’s what we’ve always done’ scenarios?

Changing the clocks alters the sun's position in the universe.

Well no, tongue in cheek obvs. It's easy to deduct 60 minutes for sure, but it gets more complicated given the timescales are all centred around the time the clocks go back, plus the issue or non-issue of a clock on a smartphone auto updating itself.

If you want half an hour to get ready and set an alarm for 1.30am and get up, in half an hour it'll be 1am again so you'd be waiting an hour to leave.

If you set it for 2.30am trying to pre-empt the clocks going back an hour thinking you'll be waking at 1.30, if your phone auto updates in that time, then in fact you'll be waking at the new 2.30am, and so will have missed your leaving time by 30 mins.

Well I think it's a bit confusing anyway. Luckily I stayed in bed whatever 😂

Did they miss the flight?

No, all good I think. At least, they were up (we set a countdown timer and an analogue alarm) and set off and I went back to sleep. 👍

Anyway. Now we can look forward to it being dark at 3pm... 😒

If you get up at 1.30 And change the clock at 2am back to 1am .....then at 2am change the clock to 1am..... Then at 2am.... You could be stuck in a time loop forever.
